Anthony Portantino for State Senate proudly announced on Aug. 26th, 2015, the endorsement from both the California and the Los Angeles County Police Chief’s Associations. Support from the Chiefs cements Portantino’s standing with the top law enforcement officials in Los Angeles County and the State of California – further putting daylight between Portantino and the rest of the Senate field with important institutional support.
“Anthony has an excellent understanding of public safety issues and an impressive record of making law enforcement a priority. The residents who live and work in the foothill communities that make up the 25th Senate District want and deserve a Senator who is familiar with our neighborhoods and who fundamentally knows that Public Safety is important to us. In particular, Chiefs and Rank and File law enforcement officers worked closely with Anthony on the ‘open carry’ ban that was signed into law. The Los Angeles County Police Chiefs enthusiastically endorse Anthony Portantino for the State Senate,” added Chief Kevin L. McClure, Political Action Committee Chair Los Angeles County Police Chiefs Association and 25th SD Resident.

While in the State Assembly, Portantino was recognized as Legislator of the Year by the Cal Chiefs for his efforts to take guns off main street California. Anthony was the author of AB 144 and AB 1527 which banned the open carry of hand guns and rifles on Main Street California. The police chiefs and many men and women in their departments had long sought the closing of the open carry loophole. Portantino was the first legislator to succeed in that effort.

“I am so honored to have earned the support and trust of both the Los Angeles County and the California Police Chiefs’ Associations for our State Senate campaign. I was very pleased to have teamed up with our chiefs and our rank and file men and women in uniform to take guns off Main Street California. To know that the chiefs stand with me, today, is humbling and a further sign of our positive momentum,” commented Portantino.

Anthony is a former Mayor, Councilmember, and State Assemblymember. He is currently a Visiting Fellow at USC and a member of the California Film Commission. Anthony is the father of two daughters; Sofia, who completed her K-12 education in the district; and Bella, an 8th grader.
