Michael Brun Haitian DJ, record producer and medical student Michael Brun is this week’s LA CANVAS Music Exclusive curator. Known for blending EDM genres like progressive house, and get this—Hatian styles like kompa and rara—this young Caribbean born music man released one of his first singles on Hardwell’s Revealed Recordings in 2011 and hasn’t stopped since. His influences range from percussion-heavy rara and Afro-groove beats of his native Haiti to disco and synth pop, and while also being friendly with the guitar and piano at a young age, he took up DJing and EDM production—but only as a hobby—at 16, before being on his way to study pre-med.

That sounds like a good enough beat that would breed an emerging artist.

Six years later with his own mix of hard work and experimentation, he’s remixed the likes of Tiesto, Calvin Harris, Armin van Buuren and Alicia Keys as well as collaborating with talent like Dirty South and Rune. And, after things kicked into overdrive in ’14 with main stage performances at Miami’s Ultra Music Festival and setting up shop at Coachella’s famed Sahara tent (Skrillex, Duck Sauce!), Brun started his own label and titled it with no other words than Kid Coconut. Aside from his joyous blog entries to our digital space, LA also welcomes him at Create on August 28th for your super live listening pleasure. Until then, clock these hot tracks inspired by our new homie:

Phony Ppl – End Of The Night (Louis Futon Remix)

This remix is more of a re-edit of the original track but the production is so good and to the point. Phony Ppl bring something so special to every song they’ve created and this is my personal favorite.

Thundercat – Them Changes

Thundercat is one of my personal favorite artists right now and he outdid himself with this new one from his latest EP. The bassline is so infectious and beautiful.

Towkio – Heaven Only Knows

Lido’s production on this track is top notch and the overall vibe is so uplifting. You can also never go wrong with Chance the Rapper and a gospel choir.

Majid Jordan – U

I think that this entire EP is so well produced but U is my personal favorite. The vocal hook is insanely catchy and the sound choice is subdued & mesmerizing.

Years & Years – Real

Another huge album for me this year was Years & Years’ debut and Real is my favorite cut. The chorus lifts so high with a dark production beneath it that takes it into a really special place.

Michael Brun X Roy English – Tongue Tied July

My new single with Roy English is my favorite song I’ve ever produced and a pretty big departure from my club releases. I really enjoyed working with Roy on this one and he absolutely nailed the songwriting and vocal.

Aquilo – Human

I think Aquilo have the potential to blow up in a big way once more people find out about them & Human is the track that got me hooked. The songwriting on this is incredible and haunting and the production is tight.

VATOGATO – tearsawai

I haven’t listened to much Juke before but this one from Vatogato that I believe samples Faith Evans is amazing! Great vibes and top notch production.
