Single Mother Leaves Behind 2 Small Children

In the wake of the discovery of Monrovia resident LaJoya McCoy’s body in her car last week, her younger brother Victor McCoy established a GoFundMe account to assist the family with final expenses and with his sister’s two children.

Meanwhile, police consider LaJoya McCoy’s death to be suspicious and are investigating. According to the Los Angeles Coroner Tuesday a ‘security hold’ has been put on the case and thus no further information can be released at this time.

Friends say the 31-year-old former accountant and owner of a clothing store had no known enemies, and had a good relationship with her children’s father.

LaJoya McCoy’s stepfather Daryl Lee Jackson spoke with Monrovia Weekly Tuesday morning. Mr. Jackson stated that LaJoya’s mother is still in deep shock. He also said the children’s two parents had an amicable relationship even though they were not married.

He said there was a rumor going around that on the last night that she was seen alive, McCoy was seen with an unidentified male in a local bar. No confirmation has been made of this rumor. Employees of the shop next to Joya Boutique, McCoy’s store, told CBS Los Angeles they were puzzled when recently she suddenly stopped showing up for work, and a “for rent” sign appeared in the window.

The investigation began Monday, June 15, 2015, when Monrovia Police responded to the 800 block West Olive Avenue, Monrovia on a “welfare check” on the resident. Relatives had called the police when they were unable to reach her. Circumstances at the residence prompted to police to obtain a search warrant for the property and to ask the assistance of the Sheriff Homicide Bureau in what was then a missing person case.

During a grid search by MPD of the area Tuesday morning, McCoy’s vehicle was located in the 200 block of Cypress Avenue. A human body was located inside the vehicle. The body has since been identified as that of McCoy.

Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau detectives continue to assist Monrovia Police Department personnel with their investigation into the circumstances surrounding LaJoya McCoy’s death last week.

Victor McCoy, McCoy’s brother, said, “Her spirit will be missed dearly, by the so many lives she touched. The family would like to raise money to help with funeral expenses, as well as money for her two young children. Your support, whether it be financial, prayers, positive thoughts; would be GREATLY appreciated during this difficult time, as we prepare to celebrate her beautiful life.”
