Rep. Chu Hosts Workshop to Prevent Scams

Last Saturday, Rep. Judy Chu hosted a Scam Prevention Workshop for residents of the 27th District alongside Assemblymember Ed Chau. The event featured stations from the Arcadia Police Department, California Senior Medicare Patrol, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, Los Angeles County Department of Consumer Affairs, and United States Secret Service.  The workshop provided constituents with knowledge about types of scams and proper prevention techniques.

“From computer and network intrusions to imposter telephone calls, a single scam can destroy a business or ruin a family. In fact, older Americans lose an estimated $2.9 billion annually to financial exploitation, and it’s estimated that for each case that is reported, 43 others go unrecognized,” said Rep. Chu. “But many of these scams can be prevented through education and community cooperation. That is why events like our annual Scam Prevention Workshop are so important. I am very appreciative to all the federal, state, and local agencies that participated to help constituents keep themselves and others safe from fraud.”

“Scam artists are continuously looking for ways to defraud unsuspecting consumers in the community, so it is important for us to provide tips to our constituents on how to protect themselves,” said Assemblymember Ed Chau.  “I am proud to have co-sponsored this event with Congresswoman Judy Chu and will continue working towards expanding protections against those who would unscrupulously defraud our hard working families.”
