A city’s most iconic structures represent not only the heart of the city, but the soul of its people. Three classic landmarks across Los Angeles will be illuminated purple in an effort to raise awareness for Alzheimer’s Disease on Sunday, June 21 in honor of the Alzheimer’s Association “The Longest Day®,” as part of Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month. Participating buildings and landmarks include LAX Gateway, Pacific Wheel Ferris wheel at Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier, and The U.S. Bank Tower (formerly known as the Library Tower). All will be lit purple, the Alzheimer’s Association’s signature color.
“Alzheimer’s disease affects more than 5 million Americans, including almost 600,000 people in California, with nearly half living in the communities we serve,” said Susan Galeas, president and CEO of the Alzheimer’s Association California Southland Chapter. “Alzheimer’s has reached epidemic proportions. Even those who have not been directly affected will be soon; which is why we must act now. Going Purple is one way to raise awareness. Another great way is by joining one of our ten Walk To End Alzheimer’s.”
On Sunday, June 21, 2015, Los Angeles residents will participate in The Longest Day®, a team event to honor the strength, passion and endurance of those facing Alzheimer’s disease. Held annually on summer solstice, the duration of this sunrise-to-sunset event symbolizes the challenging journey of those living with the disease and their caregivers. Participants raise funds and awareness to advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association.
Teams are encouraged to create their own experience as they fundraise and participate in an activity they love to honor someone facing the disease. The public is invited to get involved and show their support for the cause by “Going Purple.” The event also is a reminder that the Alzheimer’s Association is here to serve the Los Angeles community, with services, programs and a 24-hour Helpline at (800) 272-3900.
