Earthquakes or Fires: Be Prepared

 By Terry Miller

In light of the tragedy in Nepal, it is wise for all of us to remember that preparation is the key to survival in major emergencies.

The purpose of the Emergency Preparedness Program of the City of Arcadia is to prepare for and respond effectively to major emergencies. The program establishes and maintains an Emergency Management System which coordinates preparedness, response, and recovery phases for natural disasters, technological disasters and national security emergencies.
According to Arcadia’s website, the Emergency Management Program includes all elements necessary to respond quickly and effectively to major emergencies. These elements include: an Emergency Management Plan, an Emergency Operations Center, an Emergency Management Team, Public Safety Officers, an Employee Safety Officer Program, a Public Education Program and trained volunteers.

ACTION (Arcadians Caring Together Improves Our Neighborhoods) is the newly formed emergency preparedness, crime prevention, and fire prevention program for the City of Arcadia. Recognizing the importance of preparing for any kind of emergency, the City of Arcadia has prepared a useful resource handbook that gives information of how to prepare before the emergency, how to survive during and what to do after.

Topics include:

-General Emergency Preparedness

-Survival Kit Checklist

-First Aid Kit Checklist

-Food and Water for Survival

-How to Care for Those with Special Needs

-Earthquake Preparedness

-Terrorism Preparedness

-Crime Prevention

-Fire Safety and Prevention

-First Aid

-Emergency Resource Guide

To request that a hard copy of the ACTION handbook be sent to you, please call (626) 821-4314. Remember to include your name and address. Hard copy versions of the ACTION handbook are only available in English at the present time.

Request an ACTION presentation: If your civic, service, church, or neighborhood group would like a free ACTION presentation given by Arcadia Fire Department and Police Department staff, they would be happy to help. Typically, there is a verbal or computer presentation followed by questions and answers. The discussion can be customized based on your particular needs (e.g. seniors, children, and so on). A free ACTION handbook will be given away to all in attendance, and sometimes small emergency preparedness-related “gifts” will be available as well. (626) 821-2648.

City of Arcadia Emergency Pet Decals also notify rescue personnel that there are animals inside that also need to be saved. Fill out the decal with your pets’ information and affix the static cling sticker to the window nearest an entry into your house.

To pick up your free Emergency Pet Decal, go to an Arcadia Fire Station, Arcadia City Hall, or call (626) 821-4314.

Remember, the key to survival is preparation.
