May Events in Monrovia
By Susan Motander
May is a busy month in the City of Monrovia. It is, nationally as well as locally, Historic Preservation Month. Monrovia takes that very seriously. The month sees the city recognizing its own birthday and celebrating its old homes
This weekend sees the beginning of the festivities with the annual “Fountain to the Falls” race. Registration is already closed for the event, but check-in for those who have already registered begins at 6 a.m. on Saturday, May 9 at the fountain in Monrovia’s Library Park, 321 South Myrtle Avenue in Monrovia. The race will begin at 7 a.m. There will be numerous street closures throughout the city on the morning of the race.
Also on Saturday morning, the Fire Department will celebrate Fire Service Day with its annual pancake breakfast. It is often the best meal in town at only $5 for pancakes and all sorts on information on fire and home safety. There will also be demonstrations of fire equipment and lots of activities for the kids.
The next day is Mother’s Day and that means the Monrovia Historic Preservation Groups’s annual home tour. This is the 33rd annual tour of vintage homes on from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tickets are available on the group’s website at www.mohpg.org. There are also photos of all the homes on the tour. Tickets can also be obtained at the following locations: Monrovia Chamber of Commerce, 620 S. Myrtle Ave. and Dollmaker’s Kattywampus, 412 S. Myrtle Ave., both in Monrovia and at Curves, 1159 E. Huntington Dr. in Duarte.
The 17th annual Don Montgomery Memorial Golf Tournament is set for Friday, May 15. The Don Montgomery Memorial Golf Tournament began in 1999 as a tribute the year after Montgomery passed away. Proceeds go to support the Scholarship program of the Mary B. Thorne Club and the Santa Anita YMCA. Tee time is 1 p.m.
MOHPG will be conducting a walking tour of downtown Monrovia on May 16 at 10 a.m. The cost of the tour is only $5 per person and tickets are available on the groups; website www.mohpg.org Reservations are limited to 15 people and the tour will be held, rain or shine. Participants are asked to wear comfortable shoes and to meet at the corner of Pam and Myrtle Avenues at 9:50 a.m. The tour will last approximately 90 minutes.
Saturday, May 16 is also Monrovia Day itself (although the actual anniversary of the sale of the first lot is May 17). In honor of this the old town merchants are rolling out the red carpet with a sidewalk sale beginning at 11 a.m. There will even be a special visit by Hamlet, the miniature pig, at approximately 3:30 p.m.
This is also the 129th anniversary of the founding of the city. Centre Stage production will be emceeing a Myrtle Madness Event in Library Park. With music and bouncers, there will be fun for all.
