The Monrovia Wildcats hosted the Temple City Rams this Tuesday in their first league matchup of the season. Monrovia’s bats were hot early as the Ram’s Starting Pitcher Tyler Hazlet (#5) ran into trouble against the Wildcats in the bottom of the first.
The inning started with a walk from Kevin Chavez (#21) followed by a successful bunt down the right baseline by James Wright (#5), getting Monrovia runners on first and second with no outs. Isaiah Ramos (#9) stepped to the plate and hit a gap double, scoring both Quinonez (#21) and Wright (#5). A ground out by Eric Herrera (#13) brought P.J. Goebel (#24) to the plate, who blasted (what might have been a home run but for the strong wind that held it in play) a one run double over the right fielder’s head towards the wall, ending the inning with the Wildcats up 3-0.
The Wildcats earned two more runs in the bottom of the 5th thanks to two consecutive singles from Wright (#5) and Garcia (#27). Ramos (#9) singled to right, scoring Wright (#5), followed by another single from Herrera (#13) which scored Garcia (#27), stretching the lead to 5-0.
Brian McConnell (#12) submarine pitched a great six innings for the Wildcats by recording four hits, one run, two walks and two strikeouts. Three of those four hits came in the seventh inning as Temple City threatened Monrovia’s lead by loading the bases with no outs. This is when Head Coach Brad Blackmore called in Justin Rosedale (#10) to finish off the Rams.
Rosedale’s (#10) direct, over-the-head delivery was quite a change from McConnell but proved to be the correction decision as Rosedale only faced three batters; retiring each by fly out, strikeout, and groundout and earning the save. The Wildcats earned their ninth win in league play, remaining undefeated and number one in the standings.
Temple City’s starting pitcher Tyler Hazlet (#5) went the distance, pitching six innings with eight hits, five runs, two walks and six strikeouts. Hits were recorded from Ryan Lewis (#12), Chris Rabine (#2), Kevin Chavez (#21) and Jake LeGrand (#3).
This loss brings the Rams’ record under .500 at 3-4 in league play. Both teams face off again this Thursday at Temple City High School 3:30 p.m. It should be another entertaining matchup.
