Sprinklers Wash Away Minutemen’s Final At-Bat; Lose to Village Christian 2-1
By Jacob Bigley
Maranatha was headed into the bottom of the 7th with Village Christian leading 3-1 at 9:52 p.m. on Tuesday night. Trevor Marrs (#7) was due up and while taking his practice swings, the clock struck 9:55, triggering the unwanted symphony of sprinklers showering the Village Christian infielders. After a few moments scattering for the location of the sprinkler control box, coaches and umpires decided to call the game. Shortly after the players shook hands and exchanged their “good games,” it was 10 o’clock and the baseball field lights shut off, Maranatha forfeiting the 2-1 win to Village Christian. (When an inning is unable to be completed, the score falls back to the last completed inning, which was the 6th, resulting in the final score of 2-1).
The game itself was an entertaining one. Maranatha’s starting pitcher Walter Harris (#17) pitched 6 innings with 6 hits, 3 walks, 2 runs and 2 strikeouts. Village Christian’s two runs came in the 1st inning beginning with a single by Josh Argarin (#20) followed by a Ryan Whisenant (#2) fly ball to left field, which was dropped by Maranatha’s left fielder. With runners on 2nd and 3rd a hard ground ball scored Argarin, followed by a sacrifice fly to center field allowing Whisenant to tag up and reach home, giving the Crusaders a 2-0 lead.
Village Christian’s starting pitcher Chris Davidson (#13) had himself a game by throwing 6 innings consisting of 10 strikeouts, 3 hits, 3 walks and 1 run. The Minutemen’s run came in the 4th starting with a leadoff walk from Paul McAllister (#3). A hard grounder advanced McAllister to second base followed by a bunt which rolled back to the pitcher (who could not grip the ball), giving Maranatha runners on 1st and 3rd. Davidson walked Daniel Netz (#10), and now the bases were loaded. Shane Kinsman (#5) hit a high grounder to the 1st baseman, who mishandled the ball allowing McAllister to score, giving the final result 2-1.
The game went a total of six innings dueto the time constraint with Village Christian scoring the win. Maranatha is now 1-4 in league; Village Christian remains undefeated at 5-0. They face off again this Friday, 4:00 p.m. at Tujunga Little League Field.
