Monrovia Starts Outreach Program Regarding Historic Preservation and Neighborhood Compatibility

By Susan Motander

Since the passage first of the moratorium on demolition of pre-1940 houses and the second on construction of new homes in certain areas, the City has promised to consult with community members on their desires regarding the preservation of potentially historic homes and the building of large homes which may not be in character with the surrounding neighborhood.
According to City Manager Oliver Chi, the City is now ready to proceed with that outreach. In his City Manager’s Weekly Update last week, Chi announced that the city has developed a survey reading the topic and that it was available via the city’s website for input. Or click on

Chi wrote in his report that it has worked with the Monrovia Historic Preservation Group (MOHPG) to develop the survey. He also wrote that the whole project was “about two weeks behind our initial proposed schedule, however, we are very excited about the program that has been developed.”
In addition, the city has created a schedule of meeting with small focus groups regarding this issue. The following is a tentative schedule:
-April 9– MAP Leaders: time and place to be determined.
-April 16– MOHPG, tentatively confirmed, members to be notified by MOHPG.
-April 23– General Meeting with the Public, location and time to be finalized.
-April 25– Workshop at MAP Conference.
Chi also wrote that the city has “also reached out to each member of the Planning Commission and the Historic Preservation Commission to schedule individual meetings to discuss the perspectives that our commissioners have regarding this topic.”
