Robotics Super Bowl and World Class Season Wrap-Up

On Saturday, Jan. 24, Longden Elementary School hosted the Robotics Super Bowl for Los Angeles County. The competition consisted of research projects related to improving education, robot games of solving mission models symbolizing educational activities, NFL-themed Alliance Challenge of robot teams working together, and Football-themed Touchdown Challenge to have specialized robots attempt to score field goals and touchdowns.
Longden’s all-girls team, the Technic Tigers, won the Project Research Award for their innovative research and design of an automated, robot teaching assistant to help improve the teacher-to-student ratio in classrooms. In Los Angeles region, the First Lego League (FLL) season ran from August through December, culminating in the Regional Championship Tournaments held Dec. 13-14 at La Canada High School. Teams competed in four areas: Research Project, Teamwork, Core Values, and Robot Game.
Longden’s all-girls team, Technic Tigers, won the Trophy for Gracious Professionalism. The all-boys team, T.A.C.O. (Technically Awesome Creative Organization), won the Trophy for Robot Programming. Los Angeles Region First Lego League (LA-FLL) is a volunteer organization that encourages, fosters, and supports the development and competition of robot teams throughout Los Angeles County and also includes teams as far north as San Luis Obispo and as far East as Indio. This season LA-FLL had 314 teams in the region, running 13 Qualifier Tournaments and a 2-day Championship Tournament. After the season concluded, the Robotics Super Bowl presented another chance for teams to meet and compete.
