A Noise Within (ANW), the acclaimed classical repertory theatre company, presents Summer With Shakespeare—now a FIVE-week Pasadena summer camp, June 15th to July 17th, 2015, (Monday-Friday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.) for youth aged 6-18. This conservatory-style program of acting, improvisation, stage diction, text analysis, kinetic exercises, and stage combat is led by classically-trained professional actors, choreographers, and designers.
Summer With Shakespeare participants of all ages will gain an appreciation for both the Bard’s verse and exposure to a variety of his comedies, tragedies, and historical plays. This intensive camp challenges them to be both scholars and performers of Shakespeare by enhancing their acting and public speaking skills, building their self-confidence on the stage, and gaining experience in theater craft.
Summer with Shakespeare includes five fun-filled weeks of acting, stage-combat, costuming, and more, where kids can:
• Demystify Shakespeare through classes led by professional teaching artists.
• Meet fellow young artists through ensemble scene work.
• Master the language of the Bard through monologues.
• Get crafty with the art of mask making and more.
• Take charge of the stage in stage-combat workshops.
• Perform on ANW’s main stage, just like the professionals.
The camp session culminates with each of the three age-based divisions performing for an audience on the Theatre’s main stage. The young actors will perform scenes and monologues from Shakespeare’s plays on Thursday, July 16, or Friday, July 17.
Education and Community Outreach Director Alicia Green, who holds a master’s degree in educational theater from NYU’s Steinhardt School, administers ANW’s summer programs. She advises, “Our camp is unique in that each of the three levels imparts social interaction and skill sets that have been designed to be entirely age appropriate. Equally important, our campers have the unique experience of working with established professionals in the theatrical arts.”
Summer With Shakespeare takes place Monday, June 15th – Friday, July 17th*, Monday – Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (* no camp on Friday, July 3rd, Independence Day). A Noise Within is located on the corner of Foothill Boulevard and Sierra Madre Villa Avenue at 3352 East Foothill Blvd., Pasadena, CA 91107.
The five-week camp costs $1,550, (weekly options and payment plans available) and a $350 deposit is required by Monday, May 25th (not including Summer With Shakespeare t-shirt or tickets to the Final Performance). For details, contact Alicia Green, Director of Education, at (626) 356-3104 or email education@anoisewithin.org.
About A Noise Within:
A Noise Within, founded in 1991, is among the country’s pre-eminent presenters of classical theatre and is the leading presenter of these plays in Southern California. The company’s mission is to produce world-class performances of the great works of drama in rotating repertory with a resident company; to educate and inspire the public through programs that foster an understanding and appreciation of history’s great plays and playwrights; and to train the next generation of classical theatre artists.
Originally based in a former Masonic Temple in Glendale, the company moved to its present home—a building of architectural distinction designed by Edward Durrell Stone of Kennedy Center fame—in 2011. Helmed by Producing Artistic Directors Geoff Elliott and Julia Rodriguez-Elliott, who hold MFAs from San Francisco’s American Conservatory Theatre, A Noise Within delivers a seven-show repertory season and a wide range of educational programs to diverse audiences from Los Angeles County and well beyond. Voted “Best Theatre” by readers of Time Out Los Angeles and recommended by readers of Pasadena Weekly, A Noise Within is indeed “California’s Home for the Classics.”
