Jan. 15 (Thursday)

“SGVMT Spotlighter Fun-Raise IV” (1/15 @ 5:30 p.m., 805 Fair Oaks, South Pasadena) – This event is sponsored by the San Gabriel Valley Music Theatre and it is Hawaiian themed) – SOUTH PASADENA

“Shrek The Musical” – (1/14-1/17 @ 7 p.m., Covina Center for the Performing Arts) – This is a musical performed by West Covina High School – COVINA

“Thursday Garden Talks with Lili Singer” (1/15 @ 9:30 a.m., The Arboretum) – This event is part of a weekly garden and botanical series – ARCADIA

“In Her Shoes” Film Screening (1/15 @ 1 p.m., 740 N. Dalton) – This event is geared toward seniors – AZUSA

“Exploring Historic Materials and Techniques” (1/15,22,29 @ 2 p.m., Norton Simon Museum) – This event features artist Marta Rogoyska as she demonstrates the “elegant art” of tapestry. Admission to the event is free with paid admission to the museum – PASADENA

Elvis Celebration (1/15 @ 4 p.m., Hastings Branch) – This is an event that celebrates the life and work of Elvis Presley an American rock-n-roll icon who would have turned 80 this year – PASADENA

Barks and Books (1/15 @ 3:30 p.m., Sierra Madre Public Library) – This event is geared toward Children – SIERRA MADRE

Third Thursday Book Club (1/15 @ 11 a.m., Sierra Madre Public Library) – This event is geared toward adults who enjoy reading – SIERRA MADRE

Opera in the Southland (1/14-3/11 on Wednesdays 2 p.m., Pasadena Conservatory of Music) – The course examines the historical, emotional, and cultural context of five disparate operas currently being performed locally ranging from works by Rossini to Tobias Picker. Notably, Opera in the Southland offers the opportunity, on each off-week, for the class to attend five dramatically diverse local performances, from The Ghosts of Versailles at the world-class LA Opera to a highly accessible, Star Trek-inspired version of Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio by the Pacific Opera Project, and everything in between – PASADENA

Jan. 16 (Friday)

L.A. Fern Society (1/16 @ 7:30 p.m., 301 N. Baldwin) – This event is put on by the Los Angeles International Fern Society and it is a monthly meeting at the Los Angeles County Arboretum – ARCADIA

Temple City Performing Arts Presents “8 Counts to Infinity” (1/16 @ 7 p.m., San Gabriel Mission Playhouse) – This event features a private dance company and their children and junior dancers as well as instructors – SAN GABRIEL

Cheeses of Europe – (1/16 @ 11 a.m., 395 Santa Monica Place) – This event allows visitors to taste European cheeses – SANTA MONICA

Jan. 17 (Saturday)

“He’s Got Ink in His Blood: 30 Years of California Photojournalism” (1/17-3/14, Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage) – Following in his father’s footsteps, local photojournalist Terry Miller has been in the business of covering newsworthy events for over 30 years. The last 16 years of his career he has been with Beacon Media News, covering newsworthy scenes and stories throughout the San Gabriel Valley; producing thousands of breathtaking, stirring, and award-winning photographs. Readers of any of the Beacon Media newspapers should certainly take the time to visit the exhibit – ARCADIA

Community Art Festival (1/17 all day, 132 N. Euclid) – This is an event that celebrates local artists and the art community in Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley – PASADENA

“The Barber of Seville” (1/17 @ 7 p.m. & 1/18 @ 3 p.m., Lineage Performing Arts Center) – This is a theater performance that honors the story adapted from the original Renaissance opera – PASADENA

McGegans’s Brahms (1/17 @ 2 p.m. & 8 p.m., Ambassador Auditorium) – Nicholas McGegan returns to the Pasadena Symphony to provide Brahm’s Symphony No. 2 – PASADENA

Haiku (1/17 @ 2 p.m., Pacific Asia Museum) – This is a meeting of the Southern California Haiku Study group where new members are always welcome – PASADENA

“Tapestries and Textiles” (1/17 @ 1 p.m., Norton Simon Museum) – This is a tour through the museum’s collection of tapestries and historic texts and it is free with paid admission to the museum – PASADENA

Youth Basketball Opening Day – (1/17 @ 10 a.m., Garvey Park Gymnasium) – This event welcomes the youth basketball season and it is also a rededication of the Garvey Park Gymnasium) – ROSEMEAD

Jan. 18 (Sunday)

Montrose Harvest Market (1/4,11,18,25 @ 9 a.m., 2300 block of Honolulu) – Enjoy the weekly farmer’s market – MONTROSE

Doctor’s House Museum Tours (1/18 @ 2 p.m., Doctors House Museum) – This event celebrates the history of Glendale with a historic home built in 1888 – GLENDALE

La Opera Talk: Ghosts of Versailles (1/18 @ 2 p.m., 1890 Huntington Dr.) – This will be an educational event facilitated by audio and visual resources to learn more about Figaro’s opera that debuted at the New York Metropolitan Opera in 1991 – SAN MARINO

Hawaiian Music (1/18 @ 10 a.m., Pacific Asia Museum) – This event promotes the entrancing sounds of Hawaiian music – PASADENA

Kim Keum-hwa Korean Shamanism (1/18 @ 2 p.m., Pacific Asia Museum) This event will feature music inspired by the practice of Korean shamanism – PASADENA

Joel Glassman: Humdrum Poetry – (1/18-2/22, The Armory) – A series of never-before shown and groundbreaking early works (produced from 1971 through 1989) examining Glassman’s musings with the mundane – PASADENA

Expanding on an Expansive Subject Part 4 – (1/18-2/22, The Armory) – Liat Yossifor’s time-based painting process converges with the quintessential time-based medium, wet cement – PASADENA

Guitar Nights Benefit Concert (1/20 @ 7 p.m., Pasadena Conservatory of Music) – Teacher Scott Tennant, guitar faculty, and PCM’s LAYGO (Los Angeles Youth Guitar Orchestra) will present an exciting program that includes Tonadilla by Joaquin Rodrigo, “Winter” from Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons among other pieces – PASADENA

Jan. 21 (Wednesday)

Union Station Talk (1/21 @ 7 p.m., Glendale Central Library) – This event will feature William Bradley’s Los Angeles Union Station: Tracks to the Future, a celebration of the 75th anniversary of Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal – GLENDALE

Glendale Noon Concerts – (1/21 @ 12:10 p.m., Sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Glendale) – This event is a free concert for all ages – GLENDALE
