A Duarte man was found guilty today of second-degree murder and several other felony counts for a 2011 DUI crash that killed a 42-year-old woman, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.
A jury found William Jose Segura guilty of one count each of second-degree murder, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, DUI causing injury with three priors, leaving the scene of an accident, and driving while having .08 percent or higher blood alcohol.
The jury also found true allegations of great bodily injury and blood alcohol of .15 percent or higher in case GA084275.
Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 27, in Department T of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Alhambra Branch. The defendant faces at least 15 years to life in state prison.
On Sept. 16, 2011, Segura, formerly with the Navy, went drinking at two different places before driving down Huntington Drive in Duarte, according to court testimony. His car rear-ended the vehicle driven by Lisa Marie Mireles causing it to jump the curb and crash against a tree, killing her instantly, according to witness testimony.
Segura had DUI convictions in 2004, 2006 and 2010 and he was arrested for a fourth DUI four months prior to the crash that killed Mireles, prosecutors said. He was driving on a suspended license and was in a court-mandated alcohol program at the time of the deadly crash, prosecutors added.
Deputy District Attorneys John Allen Ramseyer and Lara Bazán prosecuted the case.
The investigation was handled by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
