HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL

Dear Readers–this is my 19th year writing The Social Whirl for you. I have seen many wonderful events, social and community oriented, this past year.
Remember; I write for ten local newspapers all across the San Gabriel Valley, so when you see an article not about your city, please remember the nine others!
I urge you to send me your special events. I don’t turn anyone down. The Social Whirl is always happy to have your input.
I look forward to another year of sharing the good times in our communities with you.
Warm Wishes to each of you,

Floretta K. Lauber

Santa Fe Depot on the grounds of the L. A. Arboretum, the subject of AAUW’s January 12 program

The Santa Anita Depot—-Lucky Baldwin’s Connection to the East and West

How did a dilapidated, abandoned 19th century Santa Fe Depot find a home on the grounds of the Los Angeles County Arboretum in Arcadia? How was the old depot saved from demolition and moved from its former site as a pile of bricks and boards that became the lovely, cared-for vintage Depot that we see today? These are questions that Arboretum docent Dale Carter of Arcadia is well qualified to answer. Dale is a retired mechanical engineer who has enjoyed trains from his childhood interest in Lionel trains to his present fascination with vintage steam engines. His love for the peaceful Arboretum and his interest in trains make a perfect fit.
How the transformation of the old depot came about will be explained by Dale Carter when he speaks at the Monday evening, January 12, 2015 meeting of the Arcadia Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) on Monday, January 12. The group meets at the Church of the Good Shepherd’s Jordan Hall, 400 W. Duarte Road (SW corner of Duarte Road and Holly Avenue), Arcadia. Socializing begins at 6:30 p.m. with Carter’s presentation to follow at 7:00 p.m. The public is invited to this free meeting.
