Membership Event at the Shakespeare Club

The veranda at the Shakespeare Clubhouse was bedecked with twinkle lights and decorated pumpkins for the “Harvest Moon” reception welcoming prospective members on November 5th. Rebecca Harris, Club Membership Chair and her committee provided a lovely setting for members and guests to mingle and enjoy wine and cheese appetizers. During the past summer months there were several fun events held that was hosted by Social Activities Chair, Janet Beggs and her committee that included potluck dinners at member’s homes and concerts in the parks of local communities. The “Harvest Moon Reception” was followed by a regular Club business meeting in the ballroom with a musical program by The South Pasadena High School Jazz Band, led by Director, Howard Crawford Club Member, Christine Tam Malasta, was the featured soloist and her husband Sean accompanied on the drums. New members are accepted year round to the club but the summer and fall season, with the many receptions and parties held, provides the perfect opportunity for members to invite interested friends and guests to the Club.

The Shakespeare Club has had a long history of various philanthropic endeavors benefitting many charities in Pasadena and San Gabriel Valley. In addition to the many social and philanthropic opportunities the club has to offer, members can participate in Broadway Musicals presented as an annual Club Benefit/Fund-Raiser. Next spring, the Club will be presenting the Broadway musical “Nunsense” in March 2015 with Rikki Lugo as the director/choreographer for the up-coming show. Be sure to watch for more information early next year!

On December 30th, 2014, Pasadena Heritage invites you and your holiday guests to take a walking tour featuring many of Pasadena’s architectural treasures!

Pasadena Hillcrest Neighborhood Walking Tour
The Pasadena Hillcrest Neighborhood tour allows tour goers to discover an established neighborhood of Pasadena. One of Pasadena’s most beautiful neighborhoods, the tour explores various architectural styles. Showcased on the tour are numerous grand estate mansions along with Craftsman homes such as the Freeman House designed by architects Arthur and Alfred Heineman and the Blacker House designed by Charles and Henry Greene.

Rose Villa Neighborhood Walking Tour
This beautiful neighborhood of one and two-story single-family residences east of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) includes a wide-range of Period Revival style residences as well as Colonial Revival, Italian Renaissance Revival, English Revival, and Spanish Colonial Revival. Mature street trees and historic streetlights enhance the sense of time and place.

Ticket Information:
Docents will lead small groups on walks while describing the historic homes along the route. Tours will be offered on Tuesday, December 30th. There will be two tour times offered for each of walking tours—–10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Buy tickets ONLINE now at http://www.pasadenaheritage.org/archleg. Free horse-drawn carriage rides will be offered for the first time in Downtown Arcadia on Saturday evenings, Dec. 6th, 13th and 20th, courtesy of sponsor MW Investment Group. The rides are a new element of the second annual Christmas Market presented by Arcadia’s Best Foundation in association with the Arcadia Improvement Association. Also new to the market from 5-9 p.m. Saturdays on First Avenue between Huntington Drive and Wheeler Street will be local restaurants Matt Denny’s Ale House, La Luna Negra, and Stacked Sandwich offering specialty food and beverages for purchase. Other vendors, food trucks and business vendors will also offer a plethora of delicious holiday fare.

A horse-drawn white wagonette provided by G and F Carriages in Bloomington, Ca. will take riders through Downtown and past the new Arcadia Transit Plaza featuring a lighted clock tower. Sponsor MW Investment Group is owned by local developer Matt Waken, whose Walbern Developments has been involved in the building of several prominent commercial buildings in Arcadia, among many other residential, commercial and retail projects in Southern California.

The Christmas Market, which features blowing snow, free horse-drawn carriage rides, Dickens Christmas carolers, more than 50 holiday food and merchandise vendors, Santa Claus posing for photos at a classic fire truck, inflated jumpers for kids, and live bands, is sponsored primarily by the Foothill Gold Line, as well as Forest Lawn. Horse carriage rides are free courtesy of MW Investment Group. Waste Management provides trash services. Additional support comes from the City of Arcadia, Matt Denny’s Ale House Restaurant, Marie Taylor of NAI Capital and attorney April A. Verlato.

The event is produced by Family Festival Productions in association with Wayne Tay and Town & Country Event Rentals.

Assistance League of Arcadia
Participates in Make a Difference Day

The Assistance League of Arcadia members were among the millions of volunteers across the nation who participated in the annual Make a Difference Day. The common mission is to improve the lives of others by caring projects, either as individuals, groups or organizations that impact the lives of others. For more than 20 years, USA WEEKED Magazine, in collaboration with Points of Light, has made Make a Difference Day, the largest national day of community service. It is celebrated each year on the fourth Saturday in October. During the 2014 Make a Difference Day the Assistance League of Arcadia joi8ned in this effort by holding a children’s book drive. All bo9oks collected to be distributed to needy children in the local school districts through its Operation School Bell Program. A heartfelt thanks to Chase Bank, L.A. Central Market, whose employees donated the bulk of the 950 books collectected during the October 2014 Book Drive. TEMPLE CITY SEEKING BEST HOLIDAY HOMES

The City of Temple City is now seeking distinguished homes to be recognized for best holiday decorations in the winter “Yard of the Quarter” Contest.

Homeowners may nominate themselves or other residential properties within Temple City limits. Five winners will be selected to receive a recognition yard sign and gift bag. Entries will be judged on curbside appeal only.

Apply in person at City Hall or Live Oak Park Community Center, or online at www.templecity.us. Deadline to enter is 6 p.m. on Friday Dec. 12th. Entry is free. Judging takes place the week of Dec. 15th. Winners will be notified by Dec. 18th.

Men’s chorus, have some fun during Christmas program of the Temple City High School BRIGHT SIDE SINGERS. I enjoyed two shows this week—-one at Coordinating Council and Arcadia Woman’s Club—–FABULOUS………..as always.
