The Arcadia Transit Plaza Dedication Ceremony
The dedication ceremony took place on Thursday, November 6th, 2014 at 4:00 pm. The site is located at 99 Santa Clara Street (at First Avenue), Arcadia. Council members, former mayors, transit authorities, VIPs and other dignitaries from the area attended the invitational reception, celebrating the opening of the Arcadia Transit Plaza.
The construction of the Gold Line Foothill Extension will achieve an important milestone next month when the Arcadia Transit Plaza opens to the public. The Arcadia Transit Plaza is made possible by a partnership between the Gold Line Foothill Extension Construction Authority and the City of Arcadia, with funding from the Federal Department of Transportation, Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the City of Arcadia. This multi-agency funded transit plaza will be an important part of downtown Arcadia; it will serve as a transportation hub and a vibrant gathering space for the community.
Arcadia Woman’s Club Hosts Benefit for CHOICESS November 22
Come and enjoy a preholiday Crafts and Boutique fair, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm next Saturday.
HOPPERS ALERT!!! Come find that special gift, or a new purse. Children will have a play area on the front lawn with games, face painting, RAFFLE PRIZES, etc. Three food trucks will be parked curbside.
Inside, the clubhouse will have exhibitors and booths of all kinds. Come and help the Woman’s Club raise funds to purchase their much-needed new roof. Also, to raise funds to support CHOICESS, a nonprofit organization which has been assisting adults with developmental disabilities live successfully on their own since 1991.
This is a WIN WIN for all—two great charities, both (501) (c) (3) and for the customer/guests a FUN DAY. November 22nd at 324 S First Avenue, Arcadia (across from the 1st Avenue School/corner of Diamond).
Gift of Life Gala
The Pregnancy Help Center of San Gabriel Valley is a non-profit organization located in Temple City. The center is having their 3rd Annual Gift of Life Gala November 15th at the San Gabriel Country Club located at 350 East Hermosa Drive, San Gabriel. The guest speaker will be Lauren Roman, a talented singer, writer and actress.
Cocktails and silent auction will be held at 6 pm, with dinner being served at 7 pm. The cost is $100.00 per person. All proceeds help support the work of the center. Please contact Lina Paloma for reservations and or more information at 626/309-0788.

Pins And Needles! Creations from The Wandering Foot Quilt Guild Of Arcadia
Come and enjoy this heart-warming quilt exhibit during the cool autumn holiday season! These quilts are the creations of local women done with great passion, skill and patience. The group meets every month at the Arcadia Presbyterian Church. Their purpose is to promote cooperation and exchange ideas amongst quilters and encourage high standards of design and technique in quilt making. This is an exhibit you won’t forget! The exhibit will run from November 15th, 2014 until January 3rd, 20154 at the Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage. An opening reception and quilting demonstrations will take place on Saturday, November 15th, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Museum Education Center.

Retired Teachers’ Week Just Celebrated November 2-8
“Retired Teachers Never Stop Caring about Students and about Education”
The California Retired Teachers’ Association (CalRTA) has good reason to celebrate Retired Teachers’ Week, November 2-8, this year 2014. This organization has been going strong since its inception and is now celebrating its 85th Anniversary! CalRTA was founded in 1929 (known as CRTA then) through the efforts of Laura Settle, a retired Pasadena educator, with five or six people. Now the state organization numbers over 45,000 members!
Although retired from teaching, members of CalRTA stay vital and active. One major contribution they make is through volunteer service. Many go back to the classroom—not for pay but to volunteer their time and effort. Many are active in community and social organizations that serve the public. According to the CalRTA State Communications and Technology Committee, this past year CalRTA members contributed more than 2.1 million hours of volunteer service, with only 12 percent of the membership reporting their hours. That number translates to $55 million! Besides that, members donated $660,000 in grants to schools and scholarships to future teachers.
Of equal importance is that CalRTA members, like other public employees, give back to their communities and to the state economically through pension spending. According to the National Institute on Retirement Security in its Pensionomics 2014 report, California saw $60.3 billion in federal, state and local tax revenues. Finally, pension spending by retirees, such as teachers, police officers and fire fighters, supported almost 380,000 jobs that paid $20.8 billion in wages and salaries! CalRTA President Bill Kipp states, “Retired teachers will continue to give back, both economically and through our volunteer service.”
Membership in the California Retired Teachers’ Association #71 (SGV) totals 500 members from Arcadia, Sierra Madre, Monrovia., Duarte, El Monte, Temple City and other valley cities. Membership is open to all retired educators, as well as to any others interested in joining this active group. Hear All About the Famous Adam’s Pack Station
Hear the stories of the last remaining pack station in Southern California on November 20, 2014 at noon. Deb Burgess, of Adams Pack Station, will be the guest speaker at this month’s Lunchtime Talk at the Museum Education Center.
The Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage Lunchtime Talks takes place the third Thursday of the month at the Museum Education Center. Come and listen to guest speakers who will present snippets of Arcadia history, people, places and events. Bring your own lunch or just sit and enjoy the talks with friends.

Arcadia Chamber Love Lunch at Matt Denny’s Huge Success
More than 45 attendees, including many new faces and companies, came out to the most recent Arcadia Chamber of Commerce Love Lunch at Matt Denny’s Ale House Restaurant on October 22nd. This fun gathering included networking, fabulous food & beverages and great conversations. If you are the kind of person who likes to explore where the locals go, look no further than Arcadia’s treasure Matt Denny’s.
Due to the holidays the upcoming November Love Lunch will take place at T-Neer in Sierra Madre Nov. 12th from 11:30 a.m.—2:00 p.m. T-Neer is a beautiful relaxing tea room that offers the finest quality teas, sandwiches, fresh green salads, desserts and heavenly cakes. T-Neer has available seating indoors and outdoors and is located at 142 Sierra Madre Blvd., Sierra Madre.
These “Love Lunches” were created by the Arcadia Chamber for members and prospective members who love lunch and love getting out of their homes or away from their office for a chance to relax and meet some new people and network. Attendees are invited to come anytime between 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of each month at a different restaurant each time. Order what you want and pay individually.

Matthies: Arcadia’s First Police Murder
Revisit the tragic day in 1927 when Arcadia police office Albert E. Matthies was shot and killed while on routine patrol. Daniel Hennessy has researched that event and he brings that long-ago July day into focus as he offers a glimpse through the window of time at the Arcadia of the 1920s. This special free lecture, hosted by the Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage, will be held on Saturday, November 22nd, 2014 from 2:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. at the Museum Education Center.
