In celebration of October 24th: UN Day & World Polio Day

This profound festival includes an opening night prescreening reception with filmmakers at RedWhite+ Bluezz*. The films screen at Laemmle Playhouse 7 Theatre in Pasadena.
The two-day festival features acclaimed international long and short form documentaries from California, Haiti, India, Israel, southern Africa and more. The event includes panel discussions Oct. 22 and 23. The Festival’s moving and uplifting films include:
-Brave Miss World- Miss Israel, Linor Abargil, was abducted, stabbed, and raped in Milan, Italy, at age 18. She had to represent her country in the Miss World competition only six weeks later. Exploring one woman’s journey from teenage rape victim to Miss World to empowered lawyer and activist. Directed by Cecilia Peck.
-Urban Fruit- All across the country the urban food gardening movement is growing. This film tells the Los Angeles stories of four people as diverse as the city bridging divides, navigating politics, and neighborhoods building communities through gardening. Directed by Roman Zenz.
-Making Money Mobile- Cellphones build new financial system in post-earthquake Haiti. Capturing the game-changing power of cellphones to deliver financial services to the poor. Directed by Jonathan Stack. Commissioned by the Sundance Institute and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
-Dear Mothers- The story of extraordinary challenges and hard-won successes around maternal and newborn healthcare in Moba near Lake Tanganyika in southern Africa. Directed by Mark Monroe.
-The Revolutionary Optimists- Children are saving lives in the slums of Kolkata India. The film follows Amlan Ganguly and three of the children he works with as they fight for the better future he encourages them to imagine is deservedly theirs. Directed by Nicole Newnham and Maren Grainger-Monsen. Official Selection UNAFF2013 International Documentary Film Festival.
-Phela (Life)- An intimate portrait of an expectant mother in Lesotho, who is HIV positive and has lost one newborn to HIV who follows prevention protocols before, during, and after giving birth, and then goes on to teach others. Directed by Teboho Edkins.
-Dreamers- Explores the lives of three undocumented students in the California higher education system. Pushing for their dreams, defying stereotypes, and shedding light upon America’s gap in access to higher education. Directed by Kimberly Lewis, Nia Ransom, Maria Solares, and Owen Wesson.
-Newborns- The film attempts to share the world of survivors of acid violence in India providing a look at what lies ahead and a gaze back at their pre-violence lives. Directed by Megha Ramaswamy.
-Superheroes are Saving Lives- An uncanny team of comic book superheroes, The School of 5 and their comic books are helping to save the lives millions of children every year from infections contracted from dirty hands.
When: Starts Wednesday 10/22 at 5:30pm with a reception with filmmakers at RedWhite+Bluezz. Reception is $25 per person payable at RedWhite+Bluezz.
