Former Pasadena Chief of Police Bruce Philott dies

Bruce Wayne Philpott, 70, of Pasadena, California passed away on July 29th, 2014 at his home, following a hard fight against cancer. He was surrounded by his family. Bruce was born January 8, 1944 in Portland, Oregon to Vernon and Zoe Philpott. He grew up with his two brothers, Kent and Gary, in both Oregon and then Sunland, California. As a young man, he was a leader and an athlete. He loved sports, especially baseball. Bruce grew up enjoying fishing trips with his father and brothers, and has always loved the outdoors, camping and hiking.

He lived in Glendale, California for many years where his three children were raised and where he was actively involved in local politics. Bruce entered the Pasadena Police force as a young man at the age of 21, and moved up the ranks as a dedicated law enforcement officer, completing his work with the City of Pasadena as their Chief of Police. He retired from the police force in 1991, pursuing other interests, including local and state politics, as well as continued his involvement in the local Boys and Girls Club of Pasadena, Planned Parenthood, and other organizations dear to his heart that addressed social issues related to poverty and inequity. He was a passionate activist in many ways and touched the lives of many. Taking road trips was one of his favorite activities, and being a car enthusiast; he enjoyed car shows, as well as refurbishing his beloved Studebaker, aptly named the “Commander.” He enjoyed learning, was an avid reader, and physics enthusiast. Those who know him will likely always think of him when they hear The Rolling Stones, as he loved Rock N’ Roll.

Bruce is survived by his three children, Kris Strong, Kelly Sturgeon, and Greg Philpott, his brother Kent Philpott, and his five beautiful grandchildren, Dustin, Samantha, Carson, Nicole, and Mark.
