PASADENA SHOWCASE HOUSE FOR THE ARTS IS ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR GIFTS AND GRANTS

The doors to the Pasadena Showcase House of design have closed; but, the volunteers of Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA) are busier than ever preparing for the next phase of their year. Applications for gifts or grants are now available on their website at www.PasadenaShowcase.org. The deadline for submitting an application is October 10, 2014.
Last May, $685,000 was awarded to sixty local non-profit organizations and schools by PSHA. The proceeds fr9o, the 2013 Showcase House enabled the organization to continue its legacy of funding music programs throughout the community.
Eileen Reilly, a resident of La Canada Flintridge, who has been a member of PSHA for twelve years, will be chairing the Gifts & Grants Committee. Ms. Reilly, a retired attorney, is excited about chairing this committee and overseeing the process. She understands the critical difference these grants make to programs that struggle financially and how important these programs are to the community.
Each year, PSHA awards gifts and grants to a diverse list of non-profit organizations to support their efforts in the community Concerts are underwritten to insure that the joy of live music is available to a broad range of audiences. Support of choirs, musical theater, school marching bands, dance programs, opera, jazz bands, and orchestras enriches the community and provides opportunities for a variety of groups, from, students to seniors, to learn, enjoy and grow from their experiences in these programs. Additionally, PSHA has a longstanding history of supporting the Los Angeles Philharmonic and its community outreach programs. Since 1948, PSHA has donated nearly $20 million to outstanding organizations that enrich the lives of countless people and support the arts throughout the community.

MUSEUM FOUNDATION GEARS FOR POPULAR FALL BBQ.

The Arcadia Museum Foundation is hard at work on their big fall BBQ dinner, held on the premises of their new Education Center and adjoining terrace.
Members Lee Segal and Jan McEachern are co-chairs of this fundraising party. Returning by popular demand, are JAKE’S BBQ and the band “THE LATE BLOOMERS”.
Funds will be used to furnish educational programming for the Education Center and Museum.
Those wanting an invitation mailed, should leave their name and address at the Museum—380 W. Huntington Drive, Arcadia.

IT’S ALL GREEK TO ME

Greece, the birthplace of the Olympics, is also home to many archaeological sites and over 5,000 years of history. Look at a calendar and it seems as though the people of Greece are always holding a celebration. Families are invited to discover Greek culture, mythology, history and art, and hold your very own mini-celebration of all Greece has to offer, Saturday 26, 2014 from 1:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m.

SONS OF THE REVOLUTION
Celebrating their annual Independence Day Luncheon, members and supporters gathered at the Valley Hunt Club Sunday July 13th for a sumptuous luncheon.
President Douglas Boyd, announced the addition of important historical records recently added to their collection at their American Heritage Library on south Central in Glendale. The library has provided a public service since 1893. It is a repository for books and reference material relating to the American Revolution, early American, California, and local history also genealogy.
Following lunch guests were treated to a talk by Dr. Abraham Hoffman, Ph.D. COURTING EUROPEAN POWERS: AMERICA’S EFFORTS TO MAKE ALLIANCES DURING THE REVOLUTION
**Dr. Hoffman earned a doctorate in History at UCLA with distinction. In addition to teaching for more than thirty years, he serves on the board of editors for Southern California Quarterly, reviews books, and contributes articles to history publications. His books Include: Repatriation Pressures, 1929-1939, Vision or Villainy; Origins of the Owens Valley-Los Angeles Water Controversy and Mono Lake; From, Dead Sea to Environmental Treasure. In addition to being a member of the Los Angeles City Historical Society, Dr. Hoffman is a member of the Historical Society of Southern California, Organization of American Historians, Western History Association, Western Writers of America, Los Angeles Corral of Westerners and E Clampus Vitus.

(WIN) TO HOST VICTORIAN TEA

Women Investing in Nurses (WIN) from Methodist Hospital is sponsoring its second annual fundraiser on Sunday, September 28th at 2:00 p.m. at the Arcadia Community Center. The event, a formal tea, raises money to support the education of the nurses at Methodist Hospital. The activity is quite unique because each table will be decorated differently to carry out the Victorian theme. All attendees are required to wear hats and gloves. Tickets are $50. COPING WITH STRESS AND TECHNIQUES TO HELP

Arcadia Senior Services in partnership with Pacific Clinics, Pasadena will be having a special free health presentation for individuals 50 years of age and older. This informative lecture will discuss what is “normal” stress and different types of stress. Facts of negative stress in your mood and health, and how to define what a stressor is. There will be strategies for managing stress including; limiting stressors, taking control over your stress, adapting and accepting stress. The guest speaker will also guide you on stress reduction techniques or similar techniques to help you become relaxed and tranquil. The lecture will take place on Thursday, July 24, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. at the Arcadia Community Center, 365 Campus Drive. Balloon Dog Tales with Balloon Storyteller Annie Banannie

What happens when a balloon dog plans a party? Balloon Storyteller Annie Banannie tells the goofy story of a crazy celebration with balloon costumes, audience actors, some dog-gone silly ideas! Then of course, there’s the giant 6-foot balloon! This a presentation for children of all ages on Saturday, July 19th at 2:30 p.m. or 4:00 p.m. Come early as space is limited. This free program is sponsored by the generous funding provided by the Friends of the Arcadia Public Library.

Celebrate the summer reading program finale with magician Tony Daniels. There will be fun and education for the whole family. The Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage will be presenting its third annual Arcadia at the Movies program featuring movies that have been filmed in Arcadia over the many decades. A pre-movie talk will be presented by the Curator with a background o the movie and cast. Bring your lawn chair and a beverage and relax with a fun-filled evening. The Museum will provide the popcorn!!
Tarzan Escapes featuring Johnny Weissmuller, 1936 will be featured on July 18; 7:30 p.m.
The Big Noise featuring Laurel and Hardy, 1944 will be featured on August 15; 7:30 p.m.
