On June 18, 2014, the Upper San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District and the San Gabriel Valley Water Company partnered together to present the Baldwin Park City Council with a $100,000 water efficiency grant for retrofit of the Barnes Park Splash Pad. Director Bryan Urias, representing Division 5 of Upper District, which includes the City of Baldwin Park, was joined by Dan Arrighi, Water Resources Manager for the San Gabriel Valley Water Company, for the joint check presentation to the city council.
With this grant, the City of Baldwin Park will retrofit the existing spray pool at Barnes Park with a water recirculating system that will reduce the city’s water usage at the site. “Saving water is very critical, especially in times of drought,” stated Director Urias before the council. “We must do everything we can to reduce our overall consumption of water so that we may weather these dry times and preserve the precious resources we have.”
Construction of the project is currently underway and is expected to be completed in early August 2014. Once completed, the retrofit will allow the Barnes Park Splash Pad to operate as a more water efficient system. The new water efficient pump is anticipated to save approximately 25,000 gallons of water per day, which equates to an approximate city saving of $8,000 per year in water costs. Despite significantly less water being used each day, the Barnes Park Splash Pad will continue providing the residents and children of Baldwin Park with a fun and safe activity to enjoy the cool waters on hot summer days.
The water efficient retrofit of the Barnes Park Spray Pool will serve as a model to the greater community showing that the City of Baldwin Park, Upper District, and the San Gabriel Valley Water Company are committed to making conservation a part of everyday life.
