Terry Tornek to Keynote the Pasadena Village Annual Meeting

The Pasadena Village, a non-profit organization supporting older adults who want to age in place, is holding its Annual Meeting on Sunday, June 8 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Polytechnic School. City Councilmember Terry Tornek will give the keynote address.
Launched in September 2012 with just 50 members, the Pasadena Village has grown into a vibrant community of 130 older adults who are forming new friendships, discovering new interests, and working together to remain independent, active, and connected as they age. “We’re so proud to be celebrating our second anniversary. It’s a sign of hope for the future to see how the Pasadena Village has made a difference in the lives of many older adults in the area,” says Executive Director Sue Kujawa.
The Annual Meeting is an opportunity for members, volunteers, and supporters to gather to reflect on the past year and look ahead to plan the next set of adventures. Invitees are looking forward to hearing from Executive Director Sue Kujawa, Board Co-chair Mike Babcock, and Pasadena City Council member Terry Tornek, who will speak about recent real estate development in the area and how these projects might affect seniors.
Part of a nation-wide movement of “Villages,” the Pasadena Village creates a culture of mutual support that makes it possible for older adults to ask for the services they need, provide help to others, and continue participating in the activities they enjoy. “One of the most surprising things about our Village is the extent to which people who did not necessarily know each other before have enjoyed getting together for any number of reasons-book discussions, bird watching, dining out, film screenings, and just plain having fun!” says Board Co-chair Mike Babcock.
Village members actively shape the programs, services, and social activities that the Village offers. In addition to serving on planning committees and providing administrative support, the Village’s 81 member-volunteers and 23 non-member volunteers have provided over 600 services to members. These services include local transportation, household chores, assistance with technology, and visits to members recovering from illness.
The Pasadena Village is committed to making membership accessible to Pasadena’s diverse communities, and is grateful for the support from local foundations, individual donors, and its founding partner, Episcopal Communities and Services. This support makes it possible for the Village to offer scholarships to older adults with limited resources so they, too, can enjoy the benefits of membership in this vibrant, caring community.
