Three veterans of the Los Angeles music scene are hosting a vinyl record event at a Pasadena pub on May 23 to celebrate National Title Track Day.
A title track is a song whose title is the same as the album on which it appears (e.g., “Let It Be,” “Born To Run”). Title Track Day gives record stores, bars, festivals, and homes throughout the nation the opportunity to celebrate the power and influence of these songs, typically by gathering music fans together to share, revel in, and argue about their favorite title tracks.
“Title Track Day comes right on the heels of Record Store Day last month and right during this massive vinyl resurgence across the nation,” said Russ Wiener, co-founder of The Title Trackers, a musical parody project that pays homage to and lovingly spoofs bands like The Rolling Stones, U2, and Bruce Springsteen. “We’re out to make sure that title tracks assume their rightful place in this vinyl rock renaissance.”
At the event in Pasadena, The Title Trackers will not only be spinning famous title tracks but also airing several so-called “Lost Title Tracks” that they have created. While many famous albums have a title track, many do not. The Title Trackers are filling that void be creating satiric title tracks for famous albums that do not have one, such as Exile on Main Street, The Joshua Tree, Who’s Next, Morrison Hotel, and many others.
“There’s something prejudicial about Title Track Day because it excludes albums without a title track,” said David Tokaji, co-founder of The Title Trackers. “We’re doing our part to create a more diverse, equal opportunity Title Track Day by writing and recording the title tracks that famous bands didn’t get around to.”
The Title Trackers also invite attendees to bring their own vinyl albums and CD’s to be played at the May 23 event – with one catch.
“Just be sure the album you bring has a title track,” says project co-founder Andy Hill. “One day we may live in a world where no album is title trackless, but until then we should all adhere to the protocols that Title Track Day dictates.”
What: “National Title Track Day” Celebration. The Title Trackers will be spinning title tracks on vinyl, along with satiric Lost Title Tracks of their own creation. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own title tracks on vinyl or CD to be played as well (and their own Lost Title Tracks, as applicable).
When: Friday, May 23, 7-11pm
Where: T. Boyles Tavern, 37 N. Catalina Ave., Pasadena, 91106
