Re: “Operation Cookie” aka “Cookies by the 1,000’s”
For: Hospitalized & homeless veterans
When: Wednesday, May 21st – 9:30 a.m. to noon
Where: Woman’s Club of South Pasadena
1424 Fremont Avenue, South Pasadena 91030

Thousands and thousands of cookies will be delivered to the Woman’s Club of South Pasadena this Wednesday, May 21st as part of “Operation Cookie” for hospitalized and homeless veterans. Donors–young and old–from as far away as Ventura and Orange Counties are expected to bring a variety of cookies of all shapes and sizes, tastes and textures for the annual event. The cookies will be packaged in decorative containers saluting our veterans and delivered to Veteran’s Hospitals in time for Memorial Day. This year, a WWII Navy veteran who served in the Pacific and two Vietnam veterans will be volunteering to pack cookies. The Operation Cookie “assembly line” should be in full operation from 9:30 a.m. till noon.
Last year, an estimated 30,000 cookies were delivered to the Clubhouse and distributed to almost 2000 hospitalized and homeless veterans. This year, the cookies will be taken VA hospital patients in Spinal Cord Injury facilities; General and post-surgery facilities; Nursing, Convalescent and Hospice Care facilities; and Psychological care units. We will also provide cookies to homeless veterans served by the VA and to the Wounded Warriors Battalion at Camp Pendleton.
“Operation Cookie” originally began in W.W.II when Club members sent cookies to soldiers. It continued during war efforts over the next few decades, including the Gulf War and again in Bosnia, Croatia and Kosovo. “Operation Cookie” no longer ships cookies to war zones, but now sends the cookies to hospitalized veterans at local veteran’s hospitals. Cookies are also distributed to homeless veterans served by the VA.
The Woman’s Club of South Pasadena, founded in 1899, has a long history of charitable and volunteer services. In addition to “Operation Cookie,” some of the groups that regularly receive donations are Friends of Foster Children, LA County Hospital, USC Norris Cancer Center and Huntington Hospital Cancer Center. The Club also makes financial donations to charitable and community groups, and provides scholarships to local high school students.
