Pasadena Based Los Angeles Children’s Chorus Holds Auditions June 5-8, 2014

Los Angeles Children’s Chorus (LACC), one of the nation’s leading children’s choirs, is holding auditions for boys and girls ages 8 (by September 1, 2014) to 12 on June 5-8, 2014, in Pasadena. Previous singing experience is not necessary, but audition appointments are required.

LACC trains children who may not have had previous singing experience, but who love to sing. Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to match pitch, follow instructions and thrive in a structured but supportive learning environment. Children audition in groups of five to ensure their comfort, and no preparation is necessary.

Under the artistic direction of Anne Tomlinson, LACC provides a comprehensive music education and performance program for children of diverse cultural and economic backgrounds. LACC comprises 6 progressively experienced choirs with choristers ranging in age from 8 to 18 who hail from 50 communities throughout Southern California. (Younger singers are encouraged to enroll in LACC’s First Experiences in singing classes for 6- and 7-year-olds offered in Pasadena.)

High-profile performance opportunities include annual Winter and Spring concerts plus performances at major civic events. LACC’s premier choirs perform with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, LA Opera, Los Angeles Master Chorale, among other prestigious music presenters.

There is a $50 charge per audition. Audition scholarships are need-based and applications are available upon request. Auditions will be held at Pasadena Presbyterian Church, 585 East Colorado Boulevard, Pasadena, California 91101. Celebrating 100 Years! The Woman’s Club of Arcadia Opening Exhibit and Lunchtime Talk

One hundred years and still going strong! A new exhibit that explores 100 years of historic memory of the Woman’s Club of Arcadia will be on display at the Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage. The exhibit opens May 3, 2014 with an opening reception at 11:00 a.m. Everyone is invited to attend.

The Woman’s Club of Arcadia began in May 1913 and was the forerunner of such associations as the Arcadia Library and the Arcadia Historical Society. This group of altruistic women is still going strong and continues their leadership in the community.

This special temporary exhibit will run from May 3 through May 31, 2014. Admission is free.

In conjunction with this exhibit there will be a special Museum Lunchtime Talk, “Insider’s Edition: The First 100 Years of the Arcadia Women’s Club” on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at noon. The guest speaker will be Floretta Lauber, Former Arcadia Mayor, President of the Arcadia Museum Foundation; Past President of the Arcadia Woman’s Club, Social Columnist and Social Editor for the Beacon Media News.

The Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage is located at 380 W. Huntington Drive, Arcadia, immediately behind the Community Center. Julie Fendrick To Head Santa Anita Chapter Of DAR
Julie Christine Fendrick has been a real estate investor in Arcadia, California since 2003. Previously, she was an Office Manager at Cedars Sinai where she managed the office for five cardiologists. She received her BA from UCLA and eventually earned her spot as Administrative Specialist at the University of California Los Angeles, David Geffen School of Medicine, Department of Radiology. She supervised a new interventional radiology program, liver ablation, along with heading the Radiology Fellowship Program. She also edited radiology manuscripts for publication in radiology journals. After her career at UCLA, Ms Fendrick decided it was time for a change of scenery and married her longtime friend, cardiologist, Dr. George J. Madera. Currently, Julia is the new Santa Anita Chapter Regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She is also an active member of the Arcadia Woman’s Club and is on the Board of Directors of the Santa Anita Oaks Homeowner’s Association.

Pasadena Heritage Preservation Tours And Events

Saturday, May 17th—-Busch Gardens Walking Tour
Docent-led walking tours of charming Pasadena neighborhood that was once the famous Busch Gardens will allow visitors a rare opportunity to walk the historic pathways and staircases in search of the remnants of the original garden paradise. Key garden sights will be highlighted, including the Old Mill, originally built as a playhouse for Mr. Busch’s daughter, and the Grecian Pergola, which was part of the original entrance to the gardens.

Saturday, May 24th—-Ninita Parkway-Rose Villa Walking Tour
Pasadena Heritage will host walking tours of the Ninita Parkway/Rose Villa historic neighborhood. This beautiful neighborhood of one and two-story single-family residences east of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) includes a range of Period Revival style residences including examples of Colonial Revival, Italian Renaissance Revival, English Revival, and Spanish Colonial Revival. Mature street trees and historic streetlights enhance the sense of time and place. Docents will lead small groups on a two-hour walk, describing the historic homes along the route.

Chambers Government Affairs Forum

All levels of government were represented at the Government Affairs Forum held at the Arcadia Chamber of Commerce.

” Outgoing Arcadia councilman and four-time mayor Bob Harbicht shared insights into his record-setting 20 years on the Arcadia City Council. Harbicht is termed out per Arcadia’s city charter until 2016. On the subject of term limits he remarked that in all his years running his successful market research business no client ever said to him “I like your work, but I wish you had less experience.” The city is a large enterprise with many departments and “business experience is the single most important requirement” for councilmen.

Looking back on the last 20 years, Harbicht was proud that the council realized “that we had to be more than a ‘City of Homes’-we are a city with a racetrack, a city with a regional mall, a city with an industrial base.” With that in mind, the city “has been aggressive in seeking out businesses” he continued.

Chamber CEO Scott Hettrick spoke about SB 1021 , a bill that would allow school districts to “assess property taxes at a different rate,” often called a “split roll.” Districts would be able to charge commercial properties a higher rate than residential, for example. A straw poll vote conducted on the spot garnered almost unanimous support for opposing SB 1021. Hettrick will be conferring with the Chamber Board of Directors next. Olivia Lee, representing Assemblyman Ed Chau encouraged attendees to write the assemblyman or email him regarding their stance on this bill.

” Becky Cheng, representing Congresswoman Judy Chu, spoke about H.R. 4487, Legislative Branch Appropriations Act. This bill provides for funding for specific projects including over $760,000 for hiring through the Wounded Warrior project as well as for the Books for the Blind program.

” Olivia Lee, representing Assemblyman Ed Chau, announced that the symposium on the use of drones that the assemblyman is putting together will be at UCLA or UCI on August 6th. Lee also pointed out a growing tension between legislators from Northern California and those from Southern California related to drinking water. AB 1331 provides for funding dealing with all facets of water use and conservation in our drought-stricken state.

” City of Arcadia Economic Development Manager Jerry Schwartz announced that there will be a Study Session to discuss the 2014-2015 Fiscal Budget on Tuesday, May 6 at 4:00 p.m. in the APD EOC room. Schwartz also announced that the Walk of Champions, which honors important Arcadia figures in horse-racing, is slated for installation in September. Lastly he announced that Santa Anita Park will be hosting the Breeder’s Cup in November, the first time ever a venue has hosted the Breeder’s Cup three years in a row.

Next month’s speaker will be Arcadia Chief of Police Bob Guthrie at the Chamber on June 8 at 8 a.m. The public is invited on the first Thursday of each month to hear informative presentations at the monthly Government Affairs Forum led by Chairman Jack Orswell from Orswell & Kasman, Inc.
