On a recent picture-perfect afternoon, Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts held their annual Gifts & Grants Awards reception at the 50th Pasadena Showcase House of Design. Cheri Graham, Gifts & Grants Chair, welcomed everyone to the reception where PSHA proudly awarded $685,000 to 62 non-profit organizations and community schools. Over 130 guests were in attendance to accept their awards or support those who received one.

According to Graham, “The success of our 2013 Showcase resulted in $685,000 available for Gifts & Grants. These gifts and grants were presented to community schools, orchestras, choral groups and other non-profit organizations. The awarded groups provide an array of programs, including scholarships, music education musical theater, opera and chorus productions, music therapy and the underwriting of concerts.”

“It is both an honor and privilege to chair the Gifts & Grants Committee. This committee represents the heart of PSHA. The many hours spent by all of the Showcase members are well rewarded when gifts and grants are distributed to recipients in the community” said Graham.

Entertainment was provided by Nathan Wong, a Senior at The Colburn School, who will be a Freshman at Princeton next year. Wong plays viola, and was a former Pasadena Showcase House Instrumental Competition Winner. With his mother, Teresa Wong in attendance, Nathan performed two exquisite viola pieces, one by J.S. Bach, demonstrating the perfect example of why PSHA supports the arts.

President Donna Gotch shared “Today PSHA awarded 62 Gifts and Grants to organizations who provide music programs throughout Los Angeles County. Our Gifts and Grants have a positive impact on thousands of children, young adults and seniors. Whether it’s a student who is learning to play violin, a young adult who receives a scholarship or the senior who benefits from a concert in the park PSHA is making a difference in the lives of thousands.”

Katherine Watkins, Benefit Chair for last year’s Showcase House congratulated all the recipients and expressed, “As the leader of the team that produced the 2013 Showcase House which is responsible for funding the grants being awarded today, we believe wholeheartedly in our grant recipients and the good work that you do. And so it is surely an honor, and with a great sense of gratitude, that we gather with you today to thank you for all that you do and for allowing us to contribute and be a part of your amazing efforts.”

Graham introduced a representative from each organization who spoke about how the funds would be used. ABOUT PASADENA SHOWCASE HOUSE FOR THE ARTS: This is a milestone year for PSHA as it celebrates 65 years of volunteerism, the 50th Anniversary of the Pasadena Showcase House of Design and, since 1948, the generous awarding of over $19 million in gifts and grants in support of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Walt Disney Concert Hall, numerous non-profit organizations and local symphonic, cultural and educational musically-oriented programs for youth and young adults.

An all-volunteer organization, Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA) is a non-profit California Corporation whose members donate their time and talents to produce the annual Pasadena Showcase House of Design. Founded in 1948, and formerly known as The Pasadena Junior Philharmonic Committee, PSHA adopted the Pasadena Showcase House of Design as its annual benefit in 1965. It is one of the oldest, largest and most successful house and garden tours in the nation. PSHA volunteers are united by their belief in the power and beauty of music. Their collective desire is to fund programs that nurture the study and appreciation of music, utilize music as a vehicle towards health and healing, and ensure that music is available to a broad range of audiences. To this end, PSHA supports three music programs of its own: Pasadena Showcase House Music Mobile™, Pasadena Showcase House Youth Concert, and Pasadena Showcase House Instrumental Competition.
