PASADENA’S EARTH & ARTS FESTIVAL IS MAY 3, 2014 AT MEMORIAL PARK
Celebrate nature, art, music, and community at Pasadena’s 12th annual Earth and Arts Festival, www.cityofpasadena.net/earthday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Memorial Park, 85 E. Holly St., at Raymond Avenue, and, across the street at the Armory Center for the Arts, 145 N. Raymond Ave. Pasadena’s Earth and Arts Festival is one of the biggest free “green” events in Southern California with family friendly activities, exhibits and entertainment for all ages.
A huge “Eco-Marketplace” will be in Memorial Park where visitors can browse through dozens of booths by local businesses or non-profits promoting the latest in green living, energy & water efficiency, sustainable gardening, composting, organic foods, green buildings, alternative transportation, solar and renewable energy. Several City booths will be available with staff to help answer questions about waste reduction, recycling, water and energy conservation, public transit and parks.
While at the festival, please help make it a Zero Waste event by minimizing your waste and environmental impact. Recycling and composting stations will be located throughout the festival. A Sustainable Beer Garden will feature artisan brews from Pasadena’s Craftsman Brewing Company with drinks served in fully compostable, corn-based cups.
The Department of Public Works will offer information about its different programs and services provided to the community, including staff from the City’s new Citizen Service Center; as well as staff for the City’s recycling programs and Parks & Natural Resources. Booths will feature fun games, activities, and giveaways while supplies last!
Over at the Pasadena Water & Power (PWP) booth, visitors can pick up energy and water conservation ideas; valuable rebate applications; sign up for free water-wise landscaping workshops; learn electricity safety tips and check out the department’s fleet of electric and hybrid vehicles. Little ones can try hands-on science lessons, receive free activity books, pencils and other items.
PWP also will announce the winners of the new PWP Educational Scholarship, and congratulate recipients of $5,000 worth of home-efficiency upgrades for low-income families through the City’s new Under One Roof program. More details are online at www.PWPweb.com/Scholarship and www.PWPweb.com/UnderOneRoof.
Throughout the day, the Armory Center for the Arts, www.armoryarts.org, will offer free, hands-on art workshops, while many Pasadena restaurants will sell samples from their menus. Thanks to the Armory Center, the festival kicks-off the night before at 7 p.m., Friday May 2 with the screening of Symphony of the Soil at the Armory Center for the Arts. The film explores one of Earth’s most essential, precious and endangered resources. Deborah Koons-Garcia, the director, joins the audience afterwards for a discussion.
