Pasadena soccer tournament this weekend
A Pasadena community benefit soccer tournament from will be held this weekend albeit without David Becham.
Despite the lack of celebrity star(s), the tournament will be held 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 1 and Sunday, March 2, 2014, at the Villa-Parke Community Center, 363 E. Villa St and will feature the City of Pasadena’s first adult co-ed soccer competition.
Some paid registration spots to play in the Victor M. Gordo Cup are still available for adults and youth ages 14-17. The adult tournament will be held March 1 and the youth competition is March 2. Admission is free both days. For-sale food will be available on-site.
The adult tournament begins at 8 a.m., March 1, with the final round at 7 p.m. The competition will be played in a round-robin format with 20-minute halves. Registration is $350 per team or $30 for individual players. Online registration is available at www.VMGCupPasadena.com.
The youth tournament, also in round-robin format, begins at 8 a.m. March 2, with the finals culminating at 7 p.m. Youth registration is $50 per team, plus referee fees. To register, contact Marco Bermudez at (626) 744-6511.
Proceeds from the tournament will go toward the Villa-Parke Community Center’s soccer programs and the 2014 AIDS/LifeCycle Ride, www.aidslifecycle.org, from San Francisco to Los Angeles June 1-7.
The tournament is being sponsored by Stadium Fitness and Pasadena Adult Soccer League, in cooperation with the City of Pasadena’s Human Services and Recreation Department and Pasadena small business owner Molly Taylor, who dreamed up the idea for the competition.
“The Victor M. Gordo Cup is a fun way for residents to come together and support vital programs and services benefitting our community,” said Taylor, who has been a member of Pasadena’s adult soccer league since 2008. “I thought it would be fitting to name the tournament in Councilmember Gordo’s honor because of the positive work he’s done for District 5.”
For more information, contact Molly Taylor at (310) 920-0965 or District 5 Field Representative, Vannia De La Cuba, at (626) 744-4741.
