Measure Protecting Taxpayer’s Funds Clears Assembly

Assembly Bill 757 authored by Assemblymember Roger Hernández (D-West Covina) passed the Assembly Floor on a Concurrence 75-0 vote. This bill requires the California Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) to adopt regulations and address issues regarding the improper use of funding late last year. This issue was identified in an audit by the State Controller and report to the Legislature.
“This common-sense bill ensures DPR has taken internal actions to prevent future misuse of public funds. Providing guidelines promotes transparency within the department and government and avoids any issues in the future,” said Hernández.
According to the report released by the office of the State Controller in December of 2012, DPR was subject to numerous payroll violations, including inappropriately paying higher salaries to staff. Some state parks officials circumvented normal payroll rules by assigning employees to out-of-class positions without adequate documentation.
“We need to protect taxpayer’s monies and this bill allows for the added layer of protection. I urge Governor Brown for his support in protecting and restoring public confidence in DPR,” stated Hernández
