A Southern California man was convicted on Thursday of stabbing and killing his estranged wife in north San Gabriel back in 2011, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said.
Deputy District Attorney David Ayvazian of the Alhambra Branch Office said Sherman Dion Dorsey, 42, of Los Angeles, was convicted of one count of second-degree murder for the Aug. 3, 2011, killing of Gina Reano, 45. Jurors found true an allegation that Dorsey personally used a knife in the murder.
Dorsey also was convicted of one count of attempted voluntary manslaughter with allegations of great bodily injury and use of a deadly and dangerous weapon found true, Ayvazian said.
Judge Stan Blumenfeld said the defendant will be sentenced on Oct. 1 in the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Alhambra Branch. He faces a maximum sentence of 24 years to life in state prison.
Reano was staying with her sister at their family home in unincorporated San Gabriel at the time of the murder. Dorsey went to the home with the pretext of delivering mail to his estranged wife, Ayvazian said.
Several hours into the defendant’s visit, Reano’s younger sister heard the couple arguing in an upstairs bedroom. Upon entering the room, she saw Reano bloodied and crying, Ayvazian said.
Dorsey proceeded to attack the younger sister, first attempting to strangle her and then slashing her with a broken wine glass. Gina tried to help but the defendant managed to injure the sister, Ayvazian said.
Reano was stabbed 13 times in the chest, neck and upper back. She was pronounced dead at the scene, Ayvazian said.
Her younger sister survived the attack, Ayvazian said.
