Safest, Lowest-Dose CT Scanner Acquired by Methodist Hospital

ARCADIA – With the increasing concern among patients about radiation exposure in diagnostic imaging, Methodist Hospital maintains ongoing efforts to provide exceptional patient care in a safe environment.
Toward that end, the hospital has acquired the Toshiba Aquilion One CT system, which features advanced dose-reduction and image-processing software. This latest technology ensures an “image safely” environment, according to American College of Radiology guidelines for preventing unwarranted radiation exposure.
The world’s most powerful X-ray imaging system, the Aquilion One provides high-resolution images quickly and with the lowest possible dose of radiation. This 320-slice CT scanner can produce 4D images of the body’s organs in less than a heartbeat – right here at Methodist Hospital, and physicians and staff are excited about the possibilities.
“Our acquisition of this system reflects Methodist Hospital’s long-standing commitment to improving patient safety,” said President and CEO Dan Ausman.
While using the absolutely lowest possible, safest dose of radiation, this new technology at the same time delivers the best image quality available. This provides for ideal patient care, including state-of-the-art imaging and the dynamic volume CT scanner, able to acquire 16 cm of anatomy in a single rotation. This ability to acquire the entire organ with one volume scan opens the door to a whole new world of diagnostic possibilities.
“This technology is especially helpful for our cardio-vascular services in the healing of our patients,” Dennis Graham, director of diagnostic and imaging services and radiology, said. For cardiac exams, the entire heart can be captured in as little as one rotation for coronary analysis, or over a single heartbeat to include complete functional diagnosis.
“And the exemplary patient care already provided by our advanced stroke center is now enhanced by our new CT system, the industry’s only whole-brain, 4D CT-DSA and perfusion in one exam,” Graham added. This 4D imagining means that physicians can catch pathology in images even faster and smaller than other 3D images.
Featuring the fastest acute stroke work-up – 4.5 minutes – far ahead of the community standard of 18-20 minutes, the system also features the innovative Adaptive Iterative Dose Reduction (AIDR) technology and can capture both anatomical and functional data at the same time.
In addition, this system allows the correct patient protocol to be selected, based on the patient’s age, weight and exam type. The dose is displayed on the console before scanning so the operator can confirm and validate.
