A $2.5 million commitment from the foundation of Patrick Soon-Shiong, M.D., and his wife, Michelle Chan, will be used to create the Chan Soon-Shiong Shapiro Distinguished Chair in Diabetes at City of Hope. The pledge, which will be used to enhance the scientific core and capacity of City of Hope’s Diabetes Research Center by recruiting a nationally acclaimed leader in the field of diabetes research, was given in honor of Annette and Leonard Shapiro, longtime friends and supporters of groundbreaking diabetes research and of City of Hope.
“This generous gift from the Chan Soon-Shiong Family Foundation will contribute to City of Hope’s already strong track record in successfully understanding the debilitating problems of diabetes patients,” said Michael A. Friedman, M.D., chief executive officer and Irell & Manella Cancer Center Director’s Distinguished Chair at City of Hope. “Dr. Soon-Shiong began his storied career to improve diabetes care. The fact that the commitment honors the Shapiros, whose family has supported City of Hope for more than half of our institutional history and who were instrumental in helping establish City of Hope’s diabetes program, makes it even more special.”
Soon-Shiong, a world-renowned surgeon, inventor and philanthropist who developed two leading pharmaceutical companies, and his wife have committed to support City of Hope as part of their foundation’s continuing work to fight diabetes and cancer – transforming the treatment of patients in America. With this pledge, their foundation honors the Shapiros, who themselves have a distinguished legacy of supporting diabetes research at City of Hope.

This latest gift to City of Hope will continue the legacy of diabetes research that the Shapiros helped launch, bringing additional active research to the Diabetes Research Center and aiding in the recruitment and retention of a nationally recognized leader in the field of diabetes research.
