Peacocks, race horses and jockeys join runners on course Saturday morning
The Santa Anita Derby Day 5K, which benefits local high schools and retired racehorses, will be held April 6. Starting line is the starting gate at Santa Anita Park.
The race benefits Arcadia High School, El Monte High School, Alhambra High School, Arroyo High School, Arcadia Historical Museum and Funds for Retired California Racehorses. All runners get a medal.
“This is an event that is a lot of fun and the community really comes together,” said Kathy Kinane, president of Kinane Events. “It’s a unique setting. It’s a fast, flat course that runs through the famous Santa Anita Park racetrack and into the L.A. Arboretum. It’s a fun event.”
The race, certified by USA Track and Field is one of the most colorful events of the year. Runners start from an authentic horse track starting gate, run through the historical L.A. Arboretum where they encounter peacocks and beautiful birds, and then finish in front of the huge digital leader board at Santa Anita.
Entry fee includes admission to the $750,000 Santa Anita Derby. The fee also includes a Post-Race Party on the infield with live music, fabulous food and beer garden. Chip timing is available for the 5K and Kid’s Race. T-shirts and finisher medals are awarded to all.
