Labor Chair Roger Hernández statement on the impact of sequester cuts to California
Assemblymember Roger Hernandez released the following statement on the impact sequester cuts will have on California:
“We hoped for our Members in Congress to make the right decision and avoid these disastrous sequester cuts. It is unfortunate that the sequester cuts will deeply affect California, especially at a time when our economy is recovering.
The sequester cuts will have a detrimental impact in many employment sectors throughout the state including, putting over 1,200 teaching jobs at risk. Another 64,000 civilian Department of Defense employees would be furloughed as well as losing $3.3 million in funding for job assistance to over 129,000 people.
As Chair of the Committee on Labor and Employment, I will continue to monitor and work closely with my colleagues in the California Legislature to advocate our Members of Congress to prevent any further disruptions to California’s hard-working residents and their families.”
Hernández serves the cities of Azusa, Baldwin Park, Bradbury, City of Industry, Covina, El Monte, Glendora, Irwindale, Monrovia, West Covina and the unincorporated communities of: Bassett, Charter Oak, East Arcadia, Ramona, Royal Oaks and Valinda
