Denise Hagopian, co-owner of Heavenly Choice, 534 N. Montebello Blvd. in Montebello, will be speaking on Betty Boop at the meeting of the Hollywood Business and Professional Women, Saturday, January 12th at noon at the Preston’s Restaurant in the Loew’s Hollywood Hotel at the corner of Hollywood and Highland in Hollywood. Denise Dorothy Manookian Hagopian, named after her grandmother, is a long time Montebello resident who graduated from Montebello High School in 1972. Hagopian is the country’s leading Betty Boop Collectibles expert and organizer of the annual Betty Boop Festival held in Montebello. Betty Boop’s animation debut was August 9,
1930. Hagopian began collecting “Boopabilia” in the early 1980s. When a back operation immobilized her, she studied all 115 Boop films and grew to admire the character. “Because I was laying down for a year I watched all the cartoons by date, in order,” she said. For her, Betty represented liberation: a single, fun-loving woman who did as she pleased. Actress and singer Helen Kane helped to create Betty Boop. Denise has given presentations on 30’s animators and was guest speaker for the Fleischer Family organized Betty Boop Cruise she speaks to various local organizations. She is looking forward to speaking and appraising at the 2013 Betty Boop Festival in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin.
Hagopian’s will also share her own personal story about her Armenian heritage. She was a member of the U.S.-Soviet Dialogue Committee under the Carter administration which allowed her entry into Armenia, Georgia and the Caucus region in 1978. Performing as an Armenian soloist with the Avaz International Dance Ensemble and Panejiri Greek dance ensemble, former Los Angeles Assembly member Michael Woo recognized her talent and appointed her to the Los Angeles Arts and Culture Commission where her extensive knowledge of regional differences guided event organizers regarding traditions of the diverse multi-cultural population of Los Angeles.
