City Unveils Three Streetscape Concepts at Workshop – Dec. 19
Moving forward in the Las Tunas Drive revitalization effort, the City is holding the second and final design workshop Wednesday, Dec. 19, 7 p.m. at Live Oak Park Community Center (10144 Bogue St.).
Lead project team Freedman, Tung + Sasaki (FTS) will present three possible streetscape scenarios, with designs integrating public input from the introductory Nov. 14 workshop—during which community members explored street elements that could enhance the corridor’s potential as a pedestrian and commercial activity center (e.g., outdoor dining opportunities, attractive landscaping, innovative parking configurations, etc.).
“Even though Las Tunas is our downtown main street, it is very auto-oriented and doesn’t lend well to lively pedestrian activity or exciting retail,” said Mayor Pro Tem Cynthia Sternquist. “We have an opportunity here to recreate it into a vibrant downtown with the kind of attractive draw that Old Town Monrovia and Pasadena have.”
Community members are again strongly encouraged to attend and view the proposals. FTS will consider comments and concerns toward refining a final design for Council approval on Dec. 27.
If approved, the project will become eligible to compete for grant resources toward construction—including $6 million that the City has identified and will apply for in January. Already, $800,000 in federal and state transportation funds has been secured for traffic signal upgrades and Bicycle Master Plan implementation.
Chinese translation, light refreshments and childcare services will be available at the meeting. For more information on the project, visit www.lastunasdrive.com or contact the City Manager’s Office at (626) 285-2171.
