Occupy Democracy – Pasadena is a local community group that “supports and embodies the 99% of our country, teachers; nurses and healthcare workers; office, service and labor workers; vets; students; firefighters, police, and postal workers, who have had their lives, personal and political, compromised by the vast inequalities at work in our society today.” The group wants to take our government out of the hands of corporations. They believe that America works best when our government is of, by, and for the people.
Citizens United is inspired by the Occupy movement but don’t function the same way. They are organized more traditionally and don’t require consensus to take action on issues. They seek to create a safe space for everybody in the community (particularly first-timers) to “take to the streets” (congressional offices, city council meetings, public meeting halls, talks over-the-fence, and certainly in the streets themselves) in support of social justice and peace actions. We believe democracy only works when you participate.
Professor of Law Allan Ides will discuss Constitutional implications of Citizens United. California Clean Money President and CEO Trent Lange will discuss public finance of elections with Common Cause organizer John A. Smith.
Co-sponsored by Greater Pasadena Jews for Justice (GPJJ – Maya Golden-Krasner at maya@cbecal.org) and Press for Democracy http://www.pressfordemocracy.com/
Saturday, September 15, 2012. Start Time — 2:00 p.m. Villa Gardens, Villa Vista Room 842 East Villa Street Pasadena, CA.
