Mountain Lion Stalks Monrovia Foothills Kills 2 Cats
By Susan Motander
A mountain lion attacked and killed two cats in the 400 block of Lotone in Monrovia Sunday evening. The mountain lion was seen by the cats’ owner, but had disappeared into the hills by the time officers from the Monrovia Police Department arrived on the scene according to Monrovia Police Chief Jim Hunt.
A reverse 911 call was sent out to Foothill residents on Tuesday morning alerting them to the danger a mountain lion can pose. According the prerecording message, the police department wanted individuals living in the wild land urban area to alert to the danger a lion posed to pets and young children.
According to Animal Control Officer D. Andrew, normally healthy mountain lions do not prey upon domestic animals when there is a plentiful source of its normal diet, i.e. deer. Andrew said that there were many young fawns in the foothills area and they are the usual prey for these animals.
He said that mountain lions often attack family pets when the lions are not in good health and therefore unable to stalk their usual prey. Andrew said the state animal control office was notified of the potential of a sick mountain lion being in the area. He added, “They are opportunistic animals. It might have just wandered into the yard, been hungry and, seeing the cats decided to attack.”
