Venus Meets the Sun

Steve Licata of JPL shares a very rare moment with his son Tony, 11, on Tuesday. Reflected on to a piece of paper via his elaborate telescope, Venus is a small spot against the giant sun.
Venus will crossed in front of the sun Tuesday afternoon in an event even more rare than last month’s solar eclipse. The unique occurance happens every 110 years. Only six transits of Venus are known to have been observed since the advent of astronomical instruments, with the earliest dating back to the 1600’s.
