The Pasadena Police Department continues to investigate the Officer Involved shooting and subsequent death of Kendrec Lavelle McDade, Black Male-20 of Azusa, California.
On March 24, 2012 at 11:04 pm, the Pasadena Police Department was contacted by the victim of an armed robbery. The victim informed the officers that he was in the vicinity of Summit Avenue and Orange Grove Boulevard when he was approached by two suspects who pointed a firearm at his face. The victim said both suspects were armed and fled the location. The victim immediately contacted the Pasadena Police Department and provided the above information. The victim informed the Department that he was following the two male suspects and provided their direction of travel. Officers were immediately dispatched to assist the victim and arrest the suspects.
Two uniformed officers responded to the area, observed the victim and the suspect McDade running near Fair Oaks Avenue and Orange Grove Blvd. The officers pursued him north on Sunset Avenue from Orange Grove Blvd and during their attempt to detain McDade, an Officer Involved Shooting occurred. McDade’s identity was initially unknown. He was transported to local area hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.
Pasadena Police Detectives reviewed a video recording that captured events related to this incident. The police department reviewed audio recording, including 911 tapes associated with the initial calls into the Pasadena Police Department. Additionally, individuals are continuing to be interviewed by Pasadena Police Detectives.
As part of the officer involved shooting review the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Officer Involved Shooting team was contacted by the Pasadena Police Department in the early stages of the investigation. The District Attorney’s Office, OIS team responded to the incident and will conduct their independent review over the next few months.
On Tuesday, March 27, 2012 Pasadena Police Chief Phillip L. Sanchez contacted the Office of Independent Review Group, which is under the direction of Mr. Michael Gennaco. Mr. Gennaco has been investigating police incidents for the past 10 years.
The Pasadena Police Department’s standard protocol for officers involved in an Officer Involved Shooting incident is to schedule a period of time off during the initial investigation.
