Joseph Stoddard Watercolor of Pasadena Train Station Named Museum Purchase Prize Winner at Artistic Eden: Contemporary Masters III

A watercolor depicting Pasadena’s historic train station by the prolific local artist Joseph Stoddard was named winner of the Museum Purchase Prize at the opening reception on Saturday, March 10, for the exhibition Artistic Eden: Contemporary Masters III, now on view at Pasadena Museum of History. Stoddard’s work was selected as the entry most representative of the exhibition’s theme, and will be purchased by the Pasadena Art Gallery Association (PAGA) for Pasadena Museum of History’s collection.
“We are grateful to PAGA for its generous gift of this Stoddard work to the Museum’s permanent art collection,” said PMH Executive Director Jeannette O’Malley. “Joseph Stoddard is one of the most celebrated members of this region’s vibrant artistic community; his superb interpretations of the City’s iconic landmarks are a visual chronicle of all things Pasadena.”
“San Gabriel Owl,” a watercolor by emerging Monrovia artist Hiromi Gibbs, was named winner of the Southwest Art Magazine Award at Saturday’s festivities.
Artistic Eden: Contemporary Masters III is the third biannual invitational, juried fine art exhibition featuring scenes of the greater San Gabriel Valley by nationally recognized representational artists. The exhibition, co-curated by seven local galleries forming the Pasadena Art Gallery Association, will remain on display at PMH through Sunday, July 29, 2012.
Hours: 12:00 Noon to 5:00 pm Wednesdays through Sundays.

Exhibition Details
Over 200 nationally recognized representational artists were invited to create artworks reflecting scenes of Southern California’s San Gabriel Valley for this singular juried event, which is jointly curated by the seven galleries comprising the Pasadena Area Gallery Association (PAGA): Fremont Gallery, Galerie Gabrie, Michael Hollis Fine Art, San Marino Gallery, Segil Fine Art Source, Sycamore Gallery and Tirage Fine Art Gallery The initial list of invited artists includes many of the country’s most honored fine art painters, with the final selection juried by museum officials, independent fine art professionals, and the gallery sponsors. About Joseph Stoddard
Never let reality stand in the way of a good painting. This has been Joseph Stoddard’s goal for the past twenty five years as he has struggled with the challenging medium of watercolor. He wants people to get an emotional response from his paintings and sketches and to be charmed and surprised by his interpretation. He loves to work outside in the beautiful Southern California sunshine, trying to commit to paper the sensations he experiences, in order to offer that to you.
He has produced paintings for a number of Pasadena events, including the Bungalow Heaven Annual Tour, the Colorado Street Bridge Party, the Pasadena Showcase House of Design, the California Art Club Artists for Architecture Painting Project, the Pasadena Symphony and the Pasadena Pops Orchestra.
His work has also been on the covers of a variety of publications including Westways Magazine, Pasadena Magazine, a book series published by the Historical Society of Southern California, and the Lost and Found Series by Many Moons Press. In 2001 a book of his sketches entitled Pasadena Sketchbook was published. The second edition was published in October of 2008. A collection of sketches of the University of Redlands entitled Redlands Sketchbook was published in 2007. Walter Foster Publishing published Expressive Color, a painting instruction book, in August of 2008.
He is a popular demonstrator around Southern California and is a regular teacher at Holbein’s Art Event in Vermont and the Learning and Product Expo in Pasadena, California.
