CALIFORNIA PHILHARMONIC HITS A HIGH NOTE
WITH SPECIAL PRESENTATION OF ANDREW LLYOD WEBER MEETS PUCCINI
SATURDAY JULY 9, 2011

The second concert of this summer’s spectacular Festival On The Green series continues at the Arboretum on July 9, 2011 with “Andrew Lloyd Webber Meets Puccini.”. The exciting evening features music from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s phenomenally successful productions as well as works by one of grand opera’s most renowned and revered composers, Giacomo Puccini.

Under the direction of acclaimed Maestro Victor Vener, Founder and Music Director of the California Philharmonic, the concert includes excerpts from blockbuster musicals by Lloyd Webber, such as Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Sunset Boulevard and Evita as well as arias from such beloved Puccini operas as La Boheme, Madame Butterfly, Gianni Schicci, Turandot and Tosca.

“Works by Lloyd Webber and Puccini have more in common than people may at first think,” explains Vener, whose mission since founding Cal Phil in 1995 has been to introduce audiences to what he calls “timeless great music,” whether it was written in the 21st century or the 16th. Both Lloyd Webber and Puccini make use of lush, lovely melodies, glorious orchestration and have great stories to tell. If someone loved seeing Phantom, it’s a small step back in time to love Boheme, too, as our great orchestra and guest artists James Barbour, Sandra Rubalcava and Christopher Bengochea, as well as the Cal Phil Chorale and Childrens Chorus will demonstrate.”

The 2011Festival On The Green summer concert series marks the last to take place at the Arboretum. After more than 15 highly successful years at this venue, Cal Phil is proudly moving across the street to Santa Anita Park beginning summer 2012.

Gates open at 5:30pm with the concert beginning at 7:30pm.

The series continues on July 23, 2011 and July 24, 2011 and will have people Dancing Under The Stars to everything from Bolero to Glenn Miller to Thcaikovsky’s Black Swan from Swan Lake. Rodgers and Hammerstein In Europe features Broadway and the Classics on August 6, 2011 and August 7, 2011 with That’s Entertainment paying homage to some of music’s greatest moments such as Fiddler on the Roof and Gustav Mahler’s Titan Symphony on the season’s final concerts August 20, 2011 and August 21, 2011.
