CHANGE YOUR CLOCKS – AND SMOKE DETECTOR BATTERIES – FOR DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME

Daylight Saving Time begins Sunday, March 13. The Pasadena Fire Department reminds everyone to change all your smoke detector batteries when you change your clocks forward.

Replace old batteries with fresh, high-quality batteries to keep smoke detectors ready to protect you all year long. In addition, make sure your emergency flashlights will work when you need them by using fresh, high-quality batteries.

After inserting fresh batteries in your smoke detectors, make sure they are working by activating the safety test button. The Pasadena Fire Department recommends testing all of your smoke alarms at least once a month. Replace your smoke detectors with new devices every 10 years. If you have any doubt about the working condition of a smoke detector, replace it right away.

Properly functioning smoke detectors should be placed in all sleeping rooms and in hallways directly adjacent to those rooms. If sleeping rooms are on an upper level, a smoke detector should be installed in the center of the ceiling directly above the interior stairway.

Gently use a vacuum cleaner once a month to remove dust and cobwebs. If your smoke detectors have been accidentally painted or contaminated, replacement may be necessary.

The Pasadena Fire Department encourages you to practice escape plans with your children because they are at increased risk of dying in a home fire since children often become scared and confused when a fire erupts. Make sure your children recognize the sound of your home’s smoke detector and teach them to respond instinctively to its signal. Create at least two different escape routes from every room and practice them with the entire family.
