Finally some good economic news to report not only for horse racing in general but for Arcadia’s Santa Anita track specifically as well as the city itself which lost a great deal of income from Oak Tree’s transference to Hollywood Park. Although the name has yet to be officially decreed, it seems the Pacific Racing Accociation will be the working title for Santa Anita’s fall racing meet.
The California Horse Racing Board finalized the 2011 racing calendar last week by allocating dates in the late summer and fall for three Southern California racetracks. The Los Angeles County Fair meet will be run at Fairplex Park from September 8 through September 26, followed by the Pacific Racing Association meet at Santa Anita Park (September 28 – November 6) and the Hollywood Park Racing Association meet at Hollywood Park (November 9 – December 18). As part of the allocation motion, the Board encouraged the owner of Santa Anita to continue to work in cooperation with the Oak Tree Racing Association for the benefit of the horse-racing industry, and the Board again thanked Hollywood Park for staging the 2010 Oak Tree meet.
In other racce track news:Santa Anita Park has announced that pending approval from the California Horse Racing Board, it will remain on a four-day race week schedule through March 20, and will transition to a five-day race week beginning Wednesday, March 23. The five-day race week would remain in effect through closing day, April 17.
Santa Anita’s 76-day winter/spring meeting began on Dec. 26, and with exception of holiday Mondays, racing has been conducted on a Thursday through Sunday basis. Santa Anita had originally planned to run five days a week beginning March 2, but due to a variety of factors, Santa Anita has opted to remain on a four-day schedule for the first three weeks in March.
Santa Anita Park, an iconic figure on the Southern California sports landscape, first opened on Dec. 25, 1934, and is currently in its 74th year of operation.
A number of big races have yet to be run at the current meeting, including the Grade I, $750,000 Santa Anita Handicap on March 5, and the Grade I, $1 million Santa Anita Derby on April 9.
