Police Blotter June 11-16, 2010

Monrovia PD

During the last seven day period, the Police Department handled 655 service events, resulting in 131 investigations. Following are the last week’s highlighted issues and events:

Criminal Threats / Gang Injunction Violation – Suspect Arrested
On June 11 at 8:54 p.m., Special Enforcement Team members observed a male suspect who was wanted for criminal threats and was in violation of the anti-gang Injunction. As they attempted to stop the subject, he fled and jumped the fence of a nearby business and hid between several large trucks. Containment of the area was established and a police canine was requested from Irwindale Police Department. The canine unit arrived and a responsible person for the then-closed business arrived and allowed officers to enter. The suspect refused commands to exit; the canine was deployed and the suspect was taken into custody. Three counts of violating the gang Injunction were added to the booking.

Driving Under the Influence / Traffic Collision – Suspect Arrested
On June 12 at 12:55 a.m., an officer was traveling west on Duarte Road and noticed a vehicle with loud music playing. When he attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver accelerated, turned into a parking lot, and turned off his headlights. The officer contacted the driver and determined the driver was under the influence. He was arrested. The driver claimed he had not been drinking prior to the stop, but his blood alcohol level was found to be above the legal limit.

Bear Incident
On June 12 at 10:18 a.m., an animal control officer and two police officers responded to the 200 block of Canyon Crest on the sighting of a bear and two cubs. The officers located the bears in a rear yard. The bear was startled and went up a large tree with the two cubs. Eventually the bear and cubs came down and went west out of sight.

Possession of Methamphetamine – Suspect Arrested
On June 13 at 8:30 a.m., officers were dispatched to an alley in the 600 block of West Foothill regarding two subjects arguing. When officers arrived, they saw a female come out from under a partially open garage door. The female was carrying some items in her hand. Officers thought the female was possibly stealing something from inside the garage. When they approached the female, they discovered a male subject was still inside the garage. The male subject was also detained. The officer saw the female had something clenched in her hand. He ordered her several times to show her hands. When she opened her clenched hand, two baggies of methamphetamine were revealed. Nothing was found on the male subject. Both subjects had permission to be on the property. The female was arrested for possession of a controlled substance.

Commercial Burglary
On June 13 at 3:53 p.m., officers responded to a business in the 1600 block of South California regarding a suspect attempting to break into the business. The suspect fled the location prior to officers arriving. An employee of the business was watching a security monitor when he saw a male suspect break through the business gate. Employees from the business chased after the suspect, who fled the area in a black truck. Officers were unable to locate the suspect or vehicle. Investigation continuing.

Vehicle Theft
On June 13 at 4:47 p.m., a victim parked and locked her black Toyota truck with camper shell in a business parking lot in the 1600 block of South Mountain. The owner returned to the parking lot two hours later and discovered the vehicle missing. Investigation continuing.

Sexual Assault
On June 13 at 5:01 p.m., an officer responded to the report of a sexual assault. A 26-year-old female subject was walking in the area of Madison and Colorado when she was approached by a male suspect approximately 16 to 18 years old. The suspect grabbed the female’s buttocks. The suspect continued to follow the female and attempted to grab her a second time. A struggle began, but the female was able to fight off the suspect. The suspect was last seen riding a black bicycle, wearing black clothing and possibly gray pants. The Foothill Air Support helicopter responded to the area to help search for the suspect, but the suspect was not located. Investigation continuing.

Burglary
On June 14 at 3:13 a.m., officers responded to a business in the 200 block of West Chestnut regarding two subjects in black clothing to the rear of the building, attempting to break into a car. The caller reported the subjects were crouched down near a red Civic in the alley. When officers arrived, they found the hood of one vehicle was ajar, but the suspects had fled the area. Later that day at 11:21 a.m., the owner of the business reported that a vehicle owned by an employee had been burglarized. Investigation continuing.

Grand Theft Auto
On June 14 at 11:52 a.m., an officer was dispatched to the 300 block of Highland regarding a grand theft report. The vehicle was last seen on June 12 in the morning. The vehicle is a gray, 1994 Honda Civic. The vehicle has a dent on the hood and a small fire sticker on the left window. All keys are accounted for and no glass was found on the ground where the vehicle was parked. Investigation continuing.

Mental Evaluation
On June 15 at 7:53 p.m., dispatch received numerous calls of a naked man walking in the area of Foothill and Encinitas. Officers located the man at a middle school. He is a local man who has done this at least twice in the past. He was transported to a hospital for mental evaluation.

Grand Theft Auto
On June 15 at 9:48 p.m., an officer responded to the 300 block of South Primrose regarding a stolen vehicle. The vehicle is a blue, 1998 Honda Civic. The vehicle was later found in the north alley of the 800 block of West Foothill. While officers were in the area recovering this vehicle, they located another stolen vehicle, a 1999 Honda Accord that was reported stolen to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department. Investigation continuing.

Commercial Burglary
On June 16 at 7:44 a.m., an officer responded to a business in the 1000 block of South Mountain regarding a commercial burglary. Two storage containers had been broken into in the rear lot of the location. It appears the suspects managed to remove the handle off the doors to gain entry. Two commercial grade blenders were taken. Investigation continuing.

Safety Check / Suicide
On June 16 at 4:25 p.m., an officer was dispatched to the 400 block of South Violet to check on the welfare of an elderly resident. The caller reported that newspapers were piling up near the front door of his neighbor’s house and mail was piling up in the mailbox. The resident’s car was parked in its space. The neighbor reported that the resident was 77 years old and has had two heart attacks in the past. Detectives were summoned to assist officers. Entry was made into the location and the resident was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Los Angeles County Coroner responded to the location.
