Monrovia’s World Vision Assisting in Quake Relief Efforts

World Vision International which has its headquarters in Monrovia shipped supplies Friday to aid Haiti’s quake victims. The need is growing more serious by the hour and water is especially scarce according to reports from the Associated Press.

The organization’s Denver warehouse was loaded and ready to send to Haiti as early as this afternoon, according to reports published by AP and Reuters.

World Vision has been in Haiti for three decades. The relief organization already had 370 staff members – mostly Haitians – stationed in Port-au-Prince when Tuesday’s quake hit.

World Vision’s office in the capital suffered significant damage, but all staff members were confirmed safe .

The international Red Cross estimated 45,000 to 50,000 people were killed in Tuesday’s earthquake, based on information from the Haitian Red Cross.

With an annual budget of about $2.5 billion, World Vision has evolved into a leading humanitarian organization with an estimated 40,000 workers.

World Vision’s Monrovia location has approximately 300 employees.

Among the many other agencies helping is Direct Relief International based in Santa Barbara.

Additional local efforts include the local chapters of Red Cross which said today that they are having a fundraiser at the Rose Bowl to collect funds for Haiti.
