An elderly man found strangled in Compton has been identified.

He was identified as 71-year-old Jimmie Paredes according to the coroner’s office. He was homeless.

Deputies and county firefighters responded at 12:50 a.m. to a call of a person down in the area of South Gibson Avenue and East Rose Street and located the victim, according to Deputy Michelle Sanchez of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

Paredes was pronounced dead at the scene, Sanchez said.

A motive for the strangling and a description of a suspect were not available.

The incident was initially reported as a stabbing investigation, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
