Police Thursday sought the public’s help to locate the young man suspected of shooting a 60-year-old man during a street takeover in South Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Police Department officers responded about 10:45 p.m. Sept. 18 to the area of Western Avenue and 48th Street, near Vermont Square Park, on reports of the shooting and “observed a large street takeover dispersing” before they found the victim lying on the sidewalk suffering from a gunshot wound, according to a department statement.

The victim was taken to a hospital in unknown condition to undergo treatment.

LAPD investigators reviewed security footage of the area and learned the suspect was attending the street takeover when he get got into an altercation with another spectator.

“The situation escalated when the suspect produced a handgun and fired about three times at the fleeing spectator,” according to the LAPD. “During the shooting, a 60-year-old male victim was struck in the back and fell to the ground. The victim was walking home when this shooting occurred and was not involved with the street takeover.”

The suspect fled the scene by running eastbound on 48th Street.

The suspect was described as a Hispanic man who “appears to be about 18 years old,” stands about 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighs about 170 pounds, with short dark hair. He was last seen wearing a light-colored T-shirt, dark pants and dark shoes.

Anyone with information on the shooting was asked to call LAPD detectives at 213-786-5414 or 213-910-8703. Calls made during nonbusiness hours or on weekends should be made to 877-527-3247.
